BOXING ASSOCIATION,
THOSE SIX OFFICIALS. DOMINION COUNCIL'S ACTION. A meeting of the Management Committed ot tho \\ olliiigton Busing Association was held last evening, Dr. A, W. Izard presiding. A long discussion took place with regard to tho trouble which has arisen over the New Zealand Boxing Council's selection of six officials to act ot tho forthcoming New Zealand championship meeting. On Juno 25 the Now Zealand Boxing Council wrote, notifying that thoy had selected tho following to act as officials at tho championship meeting:—Messrs. 'I'. P. Burke 'Auckland), G. Bush (Nelson), E. Cooke (limaru), X. Sampson (Wellington), H. bharplm (Ashburton), and F. Shaw (Dunedin). The communication stated that the -council had selected six of the leading referees in the Dominion, in order that they might all be utilised, as is done ill connection with the English amateur championships. Tiie letter further i-tatod fhat it is not the council's intention to set forth tho method which the Wellington Association should adopt in giving effect to the above decision, but it was, nevertheless, suggested that the wi oflirials should be divided by lot into two ;ct?; that one set should take tho first half of tho programme on each evening, and tho other sel the other half; that each official should take his turn to act as referee, his colleagues at the tiino noting as judges. The New Zealand Council added that, ill selecting (he six jfficiak they had in mind tho probability that the outcome of the adoption of the rys'lem set i r <r!h would be uniformity ol' method in the future in the. several leading centres. In'raplj to tho above letter t.lie following telegram wjs dispatched on June 27 by the Wellington As;ocialioii:—"Wellington strongly protests against propnsvd Innovation in judging. The feeling isso (■tror.g that, if the council persists, _Welj lingion may refuse to held the meeting." Following the telegram, the Wellington Arwiation dispntchcd a letter to the New Zealand Council, stating that they were not jirepared to agree to the suggestions of the council in respect to arrangements for judging at. the championships as outlined in the council's letter. Tho Wellington Association did not de'cira that its nominee should necessarily
be appointed to the positions of judges and referees, but it insisted that, in order to ensure uniformity in deciding the wholo contests, it was necessary that 'be samo judges And referee should net throughout the whole of tho contests. Tlio secretary of the New. Zealand Boxing Council replied on Juno 20 as follows:—In giving consideration to tho correspondence, the council unanimously recognised that your association ONclhnjfton Association) was quite within its rights in objecting to tho council s proposal, as tho propositi was O' l innovation hero, and was apparently not in accordance with the strict letter of tho law, as set forth in Clauso Jl., I,aw 10. Tho council believes that tlio adoption of the proposal would be in tho interests of tho sport, and that tho championship meeting of 1912, presented a most favourable opportunity to test in New Zealand a system already tried successfully at the oldest and most important amateur tournaments in tho world, especially as the six foremost referees in New Zealand had undertaken to be present. The council considers that its proposal to place the conduct of tho competitions ill tho hands of referees would oonduco to tho greater uniformity in iclation to the translation of tho competition rules that is urgently needed and desired. For these reasons and others tho council mado its proposal. ~9 admitting that it was with in tho right of anv affiliated body to lodgo a. reasonable objection to tho proposal, the- council considers it a matter for regret that your president should havo thought it necessary to conclmlo his telegram with a tliTKit. The council has always endearoured to meet the reasonable wishes of affiliated bodies, and neither refuses nor respects other than sjwrtsmnnlik© treatment. At a meeting on .Tunc 2S tlio council rescinded its resolution passed at tho meeting oil Juno 19 and agreed to the strict interpretation of the rule as required by your association, viz:—lhat only ono rcfcreo mid two judges should bo appointed to control the chamnion'ships. Tho appointments were mado by ballot, the ballot being confined to the six officials selected by tho council on Juno 19. The result of tho ballot wasi Referee, Mr. G. Bush; judges, Messrs. T. Sampson, and H. Sharplin. Tho abovo will act at tho forthcoming meeting. Tho secretary was authorised to extend tho championships over three nights if necessary. . A letter was received from Mr. Pateridge, Auckland, asking the association to giro consideration to tho claim of tho 1 Wit-weight boxer Alf Gault. It was decided to keep tho matter in view. Mr. J. Barr, Sydney, wroto in regard to tho association arranging a match between Fitzjohn and Hegarty. The letter stated that Fitzjohn would box Hegarty ot Wellington 011 tho following terms:— XGO win, tic, or lose, and ,£2O expenses. Provided another match is arranged for him within a week, following his match with Hegarty, ho would moko tho trip for .£lO less in expenses. Decided not to entertain the suggestion. I
