FINE SPECIMENS.
(Br Teleerapli—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, July 2. A valuable discovery of opals lias booU mado at Tairua, in tho Thames district* Tho opal occurs in a sinter which outcrops a few miles below thai gold mino area at Tairua, and oxlonsiva: prospecting operations aro now being carJ : ried out. Samples were brought to town;! this morning—masses of opal encased itf lumps of the sinter formation—and if thero is any pjreat quantity of fiimilar opal 011 tho held, a wonderfully rich future is in store. Tho opal' is particuy larly fine, full of fire, and flashing irridescent colour, with every movement. A' fow specimens were submitted to an oxport ill gems in tho city, aud ho at 01109 pronounced them as first-grado opal, suj perior to tho opal which lias nioda Queensland famous.
