ROUGH WEATHER IN THE STRAIT.
STEAMERS' EXPERIENCES, Vessels arriving in port yesterday report exceptionally rough weather in Cook Strait. ' Mountainous sons, with a heavy southerly gale, wero much in evidence. On this run across from Picton to Wellington, the Hotfliti enmo in for a buflfeting. She left tho wharf at <i p.m. en Saturday, ami after "plugging against it;" for 14 hours, arrived in port yesterday morning. No damage was sustained, however, save that the decks were Hooded. The Jlapourika, from Nelson, _ took 1C hours on the run across from Neison. It was a similar caso with her. All night long, however, her engines were kept hard at it, and port was mado at '1 a.m. yesterday Late on Sunday afternoon the AVestport Ccal Company's Bogulus was compelled to seek shelter in. AVorser I3ay. The, vessel was bound from AVestport to Gisborne. Both the Kotorua and Delphic, which left AVellington for Lyttelton at 4.10 p.m. and 12.15 p.m. respectively on Saturday, apparently met tho full force of tho gale. The former reached her destination at 10.15 a.m. yesterday, and tho lntter at 3.30 p.m. The Mararoa, which left Wellington, at 11.10 p.m. on Saturday, took 17J hours to get lo Lyttelton. / Several vessels of , tho "mosquito fleet" left various coastal ports on Saturday, bound for AVellington, and had not put in an appearance up till a lato hour last night. No doubt they, in common with other vessels coming through Cook Strait, hav# been sheltering from the fury of tho gale. Only the larger vessels left AVellington for their respective ports, the smaller steamers being unable to "look at it." Tho Norwegian floating wlialimj factory, liikura, left AVestport for AVellington: at 10 a.m. As she did not arrive in port yesterday, it was thought that She was sheltering in Cook Strait.
