Carroll was sentenced to seven imprisonment for a serious offenco against a littlo girl. Kuka Kopiha, found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the motoring fatality at Waipawa, was sent for twelve months to the Waipa Prison I'arm. In the divorce division, decrees nisi woro granted in the following cases William J. Sniale v. Ada Smalo, adultery; James Jesperson v. Jessio Jesperson nnd John Woir, adultery; Hilda M'lntosh v. Dugald M'lntosh, desertion; Annie Bultimoro v. Robert Baltimore, desertion; Grace Kerr Lynei v. John Lyncb, cruelty and desertion.

FORGERY AND UTTERING. Wanganui, June 28. In the Magistrate's Court this morning a young niau named George Allen pleaded guilty to three charges of forgery and uttering, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

OLD SETTLER'S DEATH. Christchurch, June 28. The Inspector of Police has received information of the sudden death of a man named John M'Gillivray, aged 85 years, at West Oxford last night. Deceased retired to bed in his usual health, and was found dead this morning. He was a very old settler in tho district.

CHARGE OF BREAKING AND ENTER

Auckland, June 28. A man named Grant was an'csted this afternoon on a 'chargo of having broken and entered Elliot's store at Mont Eden, gcliguited a safe, and stolen about <£30 in cash. Accused will be brought before the Police Court to-morrow, when lie will also be charged with breaking and entering Cousins and Atkins's coach factory with Intent to commit a crime.

SIX TRAWLERS, BUT FISH DEAR. Timaru, Juno 28.

Tho fishing industry here has grown to considerable dimension?, fivo or sis trawlers being engaged and t numerous motor-launches in deep-sea flstaing. Tho Harbour Board has erected a special jetty for fishing boats, but this is not large enough, and, at a board meeting to-day, ccmplaint was niado that, though they had spent JCCdO to assist the industry, tho district was not getting the benefit of the oheop fish, which were being vailed away to Dunedia anil Christchureh. It was paid that, if the country people did not lxmclit, the board should take some action.

TIMAR'J'S ART GALLERY

Timarii, June'2S. There has been a good deal of newspaper discussion lately in feupporfc ot tho idea of starting an art gallery at Timarii. A handsome practical lift was given to tho movement to-day by Mr. and Jlrs. Cioorgo Wells, who purchased, (out of a collection of 70 water-colours by British artists) nine of tho best at a cost ot about .£2llO to present to tho gallery. Previously sotuo classic busts and a few paintings given bv Sir. J. Cringle, M.1., had been obtained.
