NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Gilexcoe.] There will be no racing in tho Dominion to-day, and sportsmen will havo nothing to engage their attention until the Gisborno meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Friday next. Tho Now Plymouth trainer, A. Rhodes, recently lmd his license suspended for ono month for employing Hector Gray, a disqualified jockey, to rido work for him. Nautnai has, eo far, failed to successfully race further than fivo furlongs, but, with a view to seeing if the old Conqueror gelding cannot be made to stay letter, his owner has decided to race him over fences. The bay is big enough to jump hurdles, and it will be interesting to note whether the experiment is a success. • Mr. J. H. Pollock, handicapper to tho "Wellington Racing Club, was not impressed with Glenmore's form at Hastings, when lio won the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Ho has kept Mr. H. Cameron's horse on the same mark in tho big raco at Wellington. If Sir Frisco starts in tho Parliamentary Handicap this year it will bo tho fourth occasion on.which.he has contested- that event. • Mr. F. Preston's bay gelding Serenity was heavily supported on tho machino in both his races at Napier. On the first day ho was a little unlucky not to 'win, and. had his pilot (Hatch) stopped in behind the leaders until the bend was negotiated, the great pace tliat the horse, showed would have won him tho race. As it was, ho was bored out wide, and then faded a few yards off the post. This race seemed to knock him out, and he did not show tho same dash on Thursday, though a bad bump at the back of the course did not assist him. On the day that A. Julian was hurt at Napier Mrs. Julian also met with an accident at Auckland through being thrown from'a trap. The injury to Julian came at a bad time, as he would ■ most probably have been on the backs of two winners at tho Park meeting. This would havo broignt his winning total for the season to 16, or just enough to havo gained him tho premiership. Hundicappers are only human, and, therefore, liable to n-ako mistakes. One is inclined to think that tho A.J.C. weight adjuster has fallen into error in liis work for tho big events in connection with the spring meeting. People on this side of th-j water wero rather astonished on learning early this week that I'. J. Mason's two maidens—Allegory and Valido—had been given Bst. in tho Epsom Handicap and 7st. 111b. in the Metropolitan Handicap. Probably the Ricearton trainer is now regretting that he took tho pair over. B. Deeley has been inundated with offers of .rides at the forthcoming Wellington meeting, and it is more than likely that tho crack jockcy will postpone his trip to Sydney until the end nf next month. He had originally intended leaving Auckland on July 8 . Locally eomo opinion is expressed to the effect that The Nativo is tho besttreated horse in tho Winter Hurdles, and providing the black gelding; retains his ground, lie is bound to start favourite on the day. Tho Ellerslie trainers,' F. Loomb and J. Hae, with teams for the Gisborno meeting, wero taken on to Napier owing to the rough weather in the roadstead at Gisborne. They were shipped back last evening, and should arrive at Gisborne this evening. Acceptances for the first day's events at the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting closo on July 8. Tho brood mars Couronne, whoso death is announced by cable from Sydney, was ono of the lots disposed of at tho jjlderslio dispersal salo last January. Along with her filly foal by Charkmagno 11, she was sold to Rouso Bros., New South Wales, for 175 guineas. A rather amusing incident happened at a recent country pony meeting (says a Sydney exchange). A trainer engaged a local jockey to ride his pony, but, io his disappointment, tho little 'tin ran nowhere. After tho race, the jockey demanded ten shillings, tho usual riding losing fee. . "Ten bob," replied tho exasperated trainer. "Why I could buy a bag of chaff for 3s. Gd." Ashby, who was badly cut about through endeavouring to jump a fcnco recently, has made a. good recovery, and will probably bo able to rosuino work again shortly (says tho Auckland "Star"). Tho four-year-cld filly Aeroplane, by Stepniak—Vcntalcro, w,as shipped from the IJlulf on Monday by the outgoing Melbourne boat. Captain Jingle, who won tlio Napier Steeplechase, commenced his career as a cross-country performer twelve months ago at Napier Park by finishing third lo Wirral and Iloanga ill the I'-etane Hack Steeplechase. He failed twice at Trentham, but at tho Grand National Meeting lie fared better. Ho finished second to Wirral in the Enfield Steeplechase, and won the Beaufort Steeplechase, but o:i ■the third day ho fell at the Kennels dcnblo in the Lincoln Steeplechase. A movement is on loot in the South Island to promote an interprovincial point-to-point steeplechase lor selected representatives of tho various lmnt clubs in Canterbury, Olago, and Southland. The idea is to hold ilia contest or series of competitions for list, and 12st. hunters at a central rendezvous, such as Tiniaru, and ' that fhe members and sympathisers of the hunt bodies contribute towards the cost of forwarding their representatives to tho scene of actum. FIXTURES. July 4 and s—Gisborne li.C. SWplcchase.' July 17 and 20—Wellington K.C. Winter.
