THE PRESIDENCY.

DEMOCRATIC OUTLOOK.

feOOSEVELT OVERTURES TO

MR. BRYAN,

CLEAYAGE IN BOTH PARTIES.

By Telenrapli—Press Association—Copyri'sht | (Rec. June 26, 10.50 p.m.) London, Juno 26. Mr. W. J. Bryan, when proposing Mr, J. W. Kern as chairman of the Democratic Convention at Baltimore, said the country was waiting to hear whether the Convention would follow tho Republican Convention at Chicago in listening to the voico of predatory wealth. The saiiie interest which had converted the Chicago gathering into a farce was even more brazenly working in Baltimore. Mr. Kern appealed to Judgo ParkeT to co-operate in selecting a compromise chairman, as otherwise Mr. Bryan would contest the election. On a voto being taken tho result, was: • Judgo Parker 579 Mr. J. W. Kern 50G Judge Packer returned thanks for hit election' os temporary chairman, and was congratulating tho meeting on its superior orderliness over that at Chicago, when an uproar abruptly terminated tho sitting. In view of tho fact that a two-thirds majority is required for tho nomination of tho Democratic candidate, it is significant that neither Judge Parker nor Mr. Bryan controls tho Convection. Mr. Roosevelt's agents at Baltimore aro' seeking to induco Mr. Bryan, in tho event of defeat, to join forces with the Roosevelt party. Tho Conservatives are, there- i fore, confronted with the necessity of conciliating the Radicals. Another report states that Mr. Champ Clark, SpeakOT of tho House of Representatives, is now favoured as the Democratic candidate for the Presidency.
