GOVERNOR'S SPEECH AT THE OPENING. SHOW KOTES AND FIGURES. (By a'closraph—Special Correspondent.)
Palmerston, Juno 25. Another strido along tho pathway of success was taken by the Palmei'ston Winter Show to-day, for a change, fortune favoured tho show in tho matter of weather, but, although tho sun shone out of a cloudless sky, it was Ibitterly cold. There was, however, movement in plenty at .the big show, things going with a swing from morning till late at night. Generally speaking, the gathering',is .much the eaiiio as it was last year, except that it is bigger. Sonic idea of its sizo may be' gleaned from the fact that the total entries number 1833. Entering tho big machinery. hall the visitor is brought face to faco with an array of tho most modern inventions in dairy machinery and implements—factors which have enabled the industry to rise to its present great proportions. At the end of the machinery hall there stands— in the shape of a huge hnlf-ton cheese— a practical illustration of what this machinery can do. Proceeding, the visitor finds himself in the.court arranged by the Agricultural Department, which exlii&it is almost a show in itself. This is in'"charge of' Mr. A. MTherson, Field Instructor for the South Island. This year, the Department has added some new features to its court, but some of tho old ones are missing, and tho liourt is not as big as it was last year. The,apple pyramid stand, and also the stand for preserved fruits are missing, but the display is, nevertheless, a; most impressive one, , the exhibits .covering practically everything that.is produced in the nature of'■field, fodder, and root crops. A special feature of the exhibits is the result of the co-operative experiments between farmers and the Department. The root crops - are particularly strong, and each varie'.y is given a special interest, SH'iug to the fact that it lias attached to it the' class of soil in which the crop was grown, tho manure used, and the aver-age-weight of the crop per acre. New Zealand honey finds a place in the bay, and cards attached to tho exhibits indicate the nature of. the supply. For purposes of comparison, samples of honey from air parts of the world also illustra.tp'thc effect of the different food supOrchardists are provided with a capital display of commercial fruits which have been selected, graded, and packed in the manner approved by the experts with a special view to.the export trade. Another • portion of the space'is occupied by an. exhibition of weeds. 1 The display is intended to give farmers an opportunity of becoming acquainted with noxious and harmful weeds. Another ftaiiS contains a large variety of grasses, many of which are advocated .as uselul for "particular purposes. . Tho latest departure in the cheese industry— soft and fancy cheesMs also in evidence. ' The wallS'surrounding the exhibits arc hung with .'black boards nuli(•iitjng the viilue of the principal exports from tho Dominion for a number of years, and cow-testing figures are similarly disP Further on, farm and garden produce aro collected, and. although the nudity lrere i= of tho best, the competition is not vorv great.
