LEAGUE FOQTBALL,
NEW ZEALANDERSIN SYDNEY. SECOND MATCH A WIN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Eec. June 21, 8.25 p.m.) Sydney, Juno 24. The second League match New Zealand v. New South Wales was played to-day. About 14,000 people were present. The teams were constituted as follow:— Now Zealand.—Full-back, Hargreaves; three-quarters, Curran, Bradley, Kencally; five-eighths, Kelly and Jloir; half, Barber; forwards, Francis, Dunning, l'ukutai, M. Hayward, King, H. Hayward. New South Wales. —Full-back, Hallet; three-quarters, Russell, Messenger, Gilbert, Frawley; halves, Jl'Kivat _ and Farnsworth; forwards, Courtney, Noblo, Jl'Cue, Pearce, Sullivan, and Cann.
The ground was sloppy. The New Zea land backs handled the greasy ball better in the first half, and, in the second spell, played a spoiling game, the forwards kicking mostly. New Zealand kicked off and attacked immediately. For a while they obtained the ball in the scrum regularly. Following up a short kick, Kelly picked up at the twenty-five line, dodged through, and scored near the posts, Francis converting. New South AValos were frequently penalised, but at length a free-kick awarded to them on account of off-sido play enabled Messenger to place a goal._ Play was now wonderfully fast, considering tho mud, and the tackling of tho Now Zealand forwards very, sure. Near tlio end of the spell, Kelly nearly scored again from a pas 3 from Rukutai, who had taken tho ball well form a kick. White replaced Hallett who had injured his leg. The spell ended with tho score reading: New Zealand 5 points; New South Wales, 2 points. _ On resuming a free-kick for off-side play near the twenty-fivo gave Francis tho opportunity to place a fine goal. New Zealand continued to press, and after a long scramblo on the lino Moir scored near the posts, Francis converting. New, South Wales only threatened danger, <i> few times thereafter', but the defence of tho New Zealanders was sound, while their forwards, following up, often downed the opposing backs. Near the end Frawley (New South Wales) following up, kicked the' ball out of tho full-back's hands, obtained possession, and scored by tho posts, Messenger converting. Russoll, Gilbert, ond Cann were tho best men pn the New Wales side, while Curran, Kelly, Rukutai, and Francis wero conspicuous for New Zealand. Curran's defence was excellent. The finalscore was:— . New Zealand 12 points. New South Wales 7 points.
