NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Gif.ncoe.] Shrewd judges are selecting Aema to win a hack hurdle'.nice for Mr. Whitney in the near future. Prior to the Hastings mwtins, ■> where t the-Stepniak maro made a* jjftSd "'showing' in both' her races, .she had not been schooled oyer hurdles except on two occasions at the Hutt, ■where jtis only possible to gallop a couple of furlongs. • lu the ordinary course of events she should improve with last week's racing. Also, as she is a splendid juniper, taking everything in her stride, a good hurdle race should bo quite .within her compass, the moro especially'as,, the .horses seen/ out lately have not- proved "top-notehers.'' The local owner also has a useful Hat performer in Ceylon who is engaged in the linck events at the Napier meeting this week. Mollington pulled up,so leg wenry after tho Hack Steeplechase at Hastings on AVodnesdny tiiat it veall.v seemed as if ho had broken down. Even, if this is :so it will bo a difficult, matter to give him a preparation sufficiently strong to | enable him to win n big steeplechase. Tho Birkenhead gelding is a beautiful jumper, hut he-is a heavily topped animal, and - wduld'fequire.an extra good set of legs to support, hini. .Unfortunately it is to bo feared that ho has a very weak set, anil as far as a National is concerned, he can be . written out. In 'regard- to the fact that I'aisano has been heavily backed for tho National Hurdles, his showing at Hastings was the reverse of encouraging. Not at any part of the race could he go the pace set by Koran, and ;he will have to exhibit considerable-improvement if ho is to be successful at Hicearton. In the birdcago he had a big levee, both before and after the race, and various were the comments passed on his condition. The suggestion that ho will improve with racing can hardly hold, as nis condition gave tho idea that he had been kept up to the collar. Under the circumstances, it seems as if the Gisborne-owned animal is becoming a nogligiblo quantity for tho big hurdle race. Of. courso lie may strike ■winning, form at Napier, but, obviously, it" would be wiso to Tcfrain from backing him for the southern event until he does so. At the present time (in most circles) ho is likely to bo regarded as a shattered idol. Of tho rising two-year-olds 6een out at Hastings last week, none impressed so much as Mr. E. J. Watt's colt Jason, a piyliah-lonking youngster, by Achilles from Stcpina, and a rare galloper. . Sfcepina herself could gallop very fast, but was inclined to curl up when tackled. It is to be hoped, however, that there will He none of this about the Waikanae-bred ■■It. i'ho exceptionally hard going at Hasfc-:»-<s on tho opening day of tho Hawkb's ; iy Winter meeting may havo handi•vpped several of tho jumpers, and, afc .\Voier on Wodncsday and- Thursday, it may be expected that the form of tho -v«<k'previous vtf 11 ho upset. One of.the horses who' seemed to suffer from tho

goinjr was Appin, but tho tracks at Napier -should suit Air. A. Stuart's gelding to a nicety. Tho.Landsdowne trainer, .T. Phillip", lias had an addition tn his team in lliu shape of ii '.six-year-old miiro by Merri© England—La Marquise. -Mr. A. R. Jlaltby is tha owner of the marc. Apellon (Monoform— l.atona), winner of tho Great Northern Chnmpagno Stakes of 1910, is again in work at Eller.slie. W. 11. Jl'Kay, who used to, riae the horses owned by Mr. S. Jlessena, is nowattached to J. K. Thorpe's stable at EMerslu'. Recently representations were made to tho Railway Department regarding tho great inconvenience and delay by tho lack of proper facilities at Ellerslio for" entraining racehorses to fulfil engagements at up-country meetings. The Department has given tho matter consideration, mid lias promised more convenient arrangements. Colleen .Royal (tlio dam of Armine, Armida, and other winners), who last month in Ireland produced her nineteenth foal, is now 22 years old. She wejit to the stud when two years old, and only missed once—a remarkable record. According to a London exchange, Mr. H. It. Denison, the well-known NewSouth Wales sportsman at present in England, recently refused "a truly remarkable offer for his great racehorse Poseidon." FIXTURES. June 26 and 27.—Napier Park E.C. Winter. July 4 and s—Gisborue K.C. Steeplechase. July 17 aDd 20— Wellington R.C. Winter.
