NOTES AND COMMENTS,
[Bl- GI.KKCOE.] There will bo some very short-priced favourites at Hastings to-day, and that though five of lhc events arc jumping races. ■ ■ In tho Hack Steeple?, with winch the Hastings meeting opens, the Karaiiiutrained Jfollingtim jn-oniises to start first choice on tho machine, Beeliue is an unlikely starter) and is to be'reserved for the big Steeplechase. '
Tliis leaves a very, poor lot in the Haivke's Bay Hurdles. Favouritism will lie between Idealism, Stevens, and Koran. The last-named is looking very well, ami has seemingly got over tho cold which affected him at Wangamii. Stevens is supposed to be the bolter of Wright's pair, but tho Birkenhead gelding, Idealism, may show up well on his own tracks. None of the others are considered likely to trouble the judge.
Glenmore and Appin are the tw'o bestfancied candidates in tho Hawke's Bay Skiepleohasc. Tho former did not go well on tho tracks yesterday, but he worked on the flat, and, in the absence of fences, may not have.been seen at his best. Appin is improving every day, and good judges select him as a coming National winner. ' Hβ is to be ridden by l'\ Cress, who is in the front rank, as a horseman.
Tho Hawera trainer, J. Fryer, has two horses engaged in the Hack Hurdles at Hastings to-day. They are Nos. 1 and 2 on ,the list, viz., St. Toney and Bismhrk. The former has a great .private reputation, but it was badly dimmed at Hastings yesterday morning, when Jfoahau badly beat him over one and a half miles.
Golden Loop will rim in the Hack Hurdles at Gisbornc to-day, in the nomination of Messrs. Douglas and Hull. Tho latter is the well-known Gisborne owner, who has several horses in J. AW Lowe's stables. ' •
Longboat, tho full-brother to Dornmlo, is now trained by 11. Hickey at Hastinge. Ho is reported to be as good n jumper as his relative, and has plenty, of pace. If this is so, it is what'very few of the other runners have that are competing in the Hunt Cup at Hastings to-day.
Owners are reminded that nominations for the Wellington Kitting Club's winter meeting close on Friday. Fugue, who was among the winners at Canterbury Park,. Sydney, last Saturday, is a half-brother, by Sir Laddo, to Tlio Cornet, a well-known South Island performer. TJie following are.the probable starters and their riders in the Hnwke's Bay Steeples to-dav:—Whakaweira, 10st. 31b.' (F. Flynn); Glenmore, 10st. 21b. (R. Thompson); Appin, lflst. (F. Cress); Winiata, list. 121b. (Wallace Young); Beeline, 9.it. 12lb. (A. Julian); Flamingo, 9st. 91b. (G. Caddvj; The Spaniard, 9st. 7l"b. (B. Gray). .' . . , Ambrosian will .not be started in the Hawke',l Bay Hurdles, but will be reserved for the second day. ■ 'The well-known horseman "Eangi" Thompson was married .recently at Auckland, and will in future reside there. At an inquiry held at the Ascot pony meeting in Melbourne, on June 10, the authorities allowed an owner., to be represented by a barrister, whose eloquence secured the removal of two disqualifications.
Gold Webb is in foal' this year to. Gluten, to whom sho has thrown those good performers—Doughboy and Gold Size, . . ~.
Although .T. Halt: rode Nadador to victory in the Hawke's Buy Steeplechase, on two occasions, the New Zealand Turf Register from year to year keeps"Credithrg the victories to this jockey's brother, A. Hall, now thn well-known trainer. Likcwiso tho Turf Register continues to state that W. Price won the Knngitik.ci Cup on Tangimoana, whereas Jlr. Buick's horse was ridden in that race by Goo. Price, who won tho Riuigitikoi C ( up, on iio fewer than five occasions.
The Melbourne "Argus". says that the success of /Pagnli-t? in the Ono Thousand Guineas and Derby, and of Mirskn in the Oak.?, would be very gratifying to Messrs. Tyc, who recently imported the stallion Mazaga.n. Musa," the dam of theeOiiks winner, is practically a sister to Maragan, ns, like him, she was sired by Martagon, her dam being Palmflower, the grand dam of Mazagan. Tagalie is descended from the same line, as her fourth dam was Jenny' Diver,, to whom Mazagan also traces.
