WANGANUI HARBOUR.
THE PROPOSED EATING DISTRICT. Mr. AV. S. Short (Assistant-tinder-Sec-retary for Public Works) is to leave for Wansanui to-day to preside over a commission, which lias been appointed to delimit the rating men of the AVanganiii Harbour Board. Associated with Mr. Short on tho commission are Mr. Mannington, who represents the town and .suburban interests of AVaiigamii and Mr. Burnett, who represents the country settlers of tho harbour district.
The commission has been appointed to delimit the rating area under the projected Wanganui Harbour Board Knipnwcring Bill, which is to be, brought down during the- coming session. The Bill proposes to confer power on the board to ■raise u considerable loan for the prosecution of harbour improvements. The. Government has appointed Jtr. Short to act as umpire and he will preside at the-inquiry conducted by the commission. A sitting will bo held at Wanganui to-morrow and the commission will sit at Taihape on Tuesday next. The proposed district is a largo one and embraces the territory of 17 local bodies. Its boundaries were defined at a preliminary meeting of the commission and tentatively agreed to by the town and country representatives. The work of the commission will I* to hear objections to tliu projected boundaries. As defined, the dislrict extends from the mouth of the Waitotum lliver, down Ilio coast to it point near the outfall of the liangitikei River. From the latter point, th.-i boundary strikes inland in a northeasterly direction by way of the Hanhipii Tiker. The northern boundary takes in Mount Kuapehu, the township of Raetilii. and-the Maungnroa trigonometrical station. The north-western boundary huh by way of the Wangaiiui Kiver, the eastern boundary of the Waitotaro coiintv, the southern boundarv of the Taranaki land district and the Waitotara l'iver, to the place of commencement, at the muutli of (he last-named river.
The local bodies whose territory has breu included linve all been given notire of the intiuiry and public notice has also been given. It will be open for an.roiio to appear before the commission and state any objections (hey may wish to make to the scope of Hi? proposed district. Maps of the district have been prepared and have been npe.li for inspection by the local bodies and persons concerned.
