ASH BURTON SHOW
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.

The ninth combined winter show, uiiilor the auspices of the Ashburfon Agricultural ami Pastoral Association and the Ashburton Poultry Society was opeui-d yesterday. The entries total 1-iliS—a record—ami in point of all-round quality and keenness of competition the t-.xliilu-tiun is decidedly the best combined winter show yet held in Ashburlon. There is a particularly good display of fat sheep, sonic prime fat cattle, and an excellent display of well-grown h'eld roots. All kinds of home industries also make highly creditable displays. The Agricultural Department's exhibit is most ink-r----esting and instructive generally for orchard and garden products. The Poultry Society has in its various sections large numbers of well bred and well brought out poultry, pigeons, and canaries and there is a' lot of close competition.
The Hon. Thomas Buxton participated in the opening ceremony, and dwelt on the progress of dairying and of land settlement under the beneficient policy inaugurated and carried out by the Liberal Government. He quoted figures in support, but these have all been given out previously. He specially lauded the Land Settlement Finance Act, under which fourteen associations, representing ninety-two persons and \b,37'l acres of land, had been procured last year, bringing the total to date sinco the passing of the Act of twenty-five associations, representing 160 persons and 2-t,52G acres of land.
