HOCKEY. THE MID-WEEK ASSOCIATION. Horeawa 4 Knrori .'1 Petono 2 Jlui Mai 2 The final games in the first round of tho mid-week competition were played on Wednesday al'tornaon. The match Here-lura-luu'ori was played nt Karori, ami, towards the end of the game, the ground was very much on the shiipery side. Hereawa wero fortunate in winning. When tho scores were equal, and Karori defending, one of the Karori players, in endeavouring to clear, drove the hull into his own goal, thus giving the win to Hereawa. Tho Potone-Hui Mai match took place at Petone. Owing to rain, tho game wns played, on No. 2 ground, which was very soft and greasy, tho players having great difficulty in keeping on their, feet. Hereawa—Karori. Playing ten men iu the first spell, Hereawa had tho best of tho game for some timo. Their score was opened by Le Compt finding tho net. Then Karori attacked, ,but tho backs cleared, and tlis forwards, getting the ball, carried play to Karon's end, where, from n passing-rush, Caterer scored Hereawa's second goal. On resuming, Karori carried play into Hereawa's quarters, and, from a fine piece of play, Dyer scored. Just before halftime Lower added another goal for Karori. In tho second spell play was even for some time, and then the Hereawa forwards broke, away, and, getting into the circle, Caterer found tho net. From a free-hit, Karori had Hereawa on tho defence, and F. Spiers scored, as tho result of fast following up. After a lot of longhitting, Hereawa got into Kami's circle, and, in a scramble in front of goal, a Karori player in endeavouring to clear, shot the ball, hit it into his own goal, thus giving Hereawa tho final lead. After, this, Karori, playing with dnsh, endeavoured to equalise the scores, but without success.' ' For Hereawa, Le Conipt, Caterer, Smith, and Bruco-played well, while for Karori K. and F. Spiers, Henderson, and Lewer were the pick of a good lot. Petone—Hui Mai. At the time of starting it was raining hard, and the ground was very slippery. From the "bully off" Petono carried play into' Hui Mai quarters, only to be driven back by the stopping a,nd passing of tho Hui Mai backs. Play for a time was carried from end to end, until the Hui Mai forwards, getting the ball, had Petone on tho defence. Danger was averted by a long drive into mid-field, but play was soon on Petone's side .of the half-way line, and Bay shot a goal for Hui Mai, bnt it was disallowed. Hui Mai still kept up the attack, but offside play gave Petone a free hit, which, owing to the bad state of the ground, only travelled a few yards, giving Hoy (for Hui Mai) a chance, which was accepted. When-play re-started, Hui Mai still had the best of matters, but a frce-liit gave Petone a chance, and play was carried over Hui Mai's twenty-five yards line, a fine forward passing rush ending in Taplin finding the not. In the second spell Hui Mai were kept defending at the outset, but a long drive by Selig shifted play, and Bay, by quick following up, scored. Petone now had all the best of the play, and had Hui Mai on the defence. 'The latter gave corner after corner, and, from a penaltycomer, W. M'Ewau shot a goal. Time was called without any further score. For Petone, M'Ewan Bros., Taplin, Pointon, and Parrant were the best, while for Hui Mai, Selig, Stall, Sherwood, M'Keown, Cameron, and M'Natty showed good form. Mr. J. C. Cusack was referee.
