STEAMER IN DISTRESS.
« ASSISTANCE FOE THE TIMARU. By Telesrosh—Press Association—Cosyrlcli* Sydney, June 12. The coastal steamer Timaru, which is aground at the Tweed River, has a cargo of timber and farm produce. She sprung a leak during'heavy weather on Saturday night, and the crew were unablo to cope with the water, which extinguished the fires. Meantime they jettisoned some of the cargo, and ran the vessel inshore, whero sho was anchored, and managed to check the leak. When tho boat capsized in endeavouring to effect a landing, a youth named Stephens swam to the assistance of its occupants, and at great risk' helped tho stragglers ashore in an exhausted condition. The captain, two engineers, and five of the crew were still aboard last night. They are short of provisions. Assistance has been sent. (Ree. June 12, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 12. A message from Tweed Heads st|fes that tho 7 'tug Bearer passed northwards early in tho day towing the Timaru.
