TITANIC'S BOATS.

The Commission appointed under tho presidency of Lord Mersey to inquire on behalf of the Board of Trade into the Titanic disaster continued its examination of witnesses. The Right Hon. Alexander Carlislo, coneultant and adviser to Messrs. Hariand nnd Wolff (builders of the Titanic), who last year was appointed one of the Merchant Shipping Advisory Committee, in making a report to the Board of Trado on tffe-saviug appliances, said that before the Titanic sailed le had told the Merchant Shipping Act Committee- that sho had not sufficient boats. She should have had forty-eight instead of sixteen. He had also told the owners the same thing. Mr. Blackett, naval architect, said the Titanic sank owing to the bulkheads giving way. The problem of bulkheads, he added, was still unsolved. A PECULIAR POSITION. ' (Hoc, June 11, 11.35 p.m.) London, June 11. Mr. Carlisle, in continuing his evidence, stated that he showed tho "White Star management his plans providing more boats on the Titanic. It vested with the company to decide the number, He signed the report of the Advisory Com-, mittee of the Board of Trade, recommending fewer boats than the Titanic carried. He admitted it was difficult to explain why he signed the report as he did not approve of the number. Mr. Havelock Wilson, Secretary of the Seamen's Union, had also signed the report though lie also "iid not approve of it. CUNARD COMPANY REFUSES ' RECOMPENSE. ' (Rec. June 11, 11.35 p.m.) London, June 11. The Cunard Company has refused to accept any recompense for picking up the Titanic's survivors. The White Star management have presented gifts ranging from one hundred guineas to Captain Rostron, of the C'arpathia, to a month's pay to the crew.
