COMPETING DOMINIONS. By Tolegraph—Press Association— Copyright Toronto, Juno 9. Mr. Hawke, Canada's Special Commissioner, in a report on the immigration services of the Dominion of Canada, points out that Australia has become a strong competitor, and ho apprehends that she will become a formidable one. He urges Canada, to re-adapt her immigration machinery to secure the utmost degreo of permanence in the immigration stream and distribution, with greater co-operation on the part of the I'edoral and Provincial Governments.
AUSTRALIA URGED TO "GO SLOW." Sydney, June 10. The State Government has cabled to Mr. ,T. A. Coghlan, Agent-General for New' South Wales, to "go slow" at present in tho matter of immigration. It is stated that farm hands and artisans aro readily plaoed, but that too many unfkilled men are being sent. The dryness is affecting the demand for men .in the country. Incidentally, shippers desire to raise the assisted immigrants' fares from .£l2 to „OM.
LABOUR CONGRESS HOSTILE. (Rec. June 10, 9.5 p.m.) | Sydney, June 10. The State Labour Congress, by twenty rotes to thirteen, carried a resolution requesting the Government to discontinue its immigration policy. The congress rejected an amendment asking for the limitation of immigration to competent persons for whom legitimate employment was available without .displacing local workers.
