HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondent.)
At Petone on Saturday morning, before Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, J.P., Bella Gage was charged with theft of a cheque for £'2, the property of Alice Te Puni. Accused was remanded till Monday next. The Kutt Borough Council held a special meeting on Friday night, to consider the estimates for the year, but their deliberations were not completed. Following the usual practice an inspection of the borough'will be made by Councillors before the estimates are confirmed. .Designs and specifications for the town clock for Petono are now to Land, and, according to the Mayor, the one most likely to be accepted is a turret clock, with four illuminated dials, chimes, and hour bell. The clock is of the latest type, and is so arranged that the works can be installed on the first floor the bell and chimes being at the base of the tower, leaving only the dials >M light fittings to be put into position in the tower. In conversation with a reporter, Mr M'Ewan said that some people were r,f the opinion that the tower would not hold the weight of a big clock, but the design did awav with that difficulty. The hour bell weigtis scwt., and the four peal bells total 15cwt. The opal glasses which will cover the four dials will enable citizens to see the time at night without any li"ht inside. The estimated cost of the clock, including its installation, is £ii 9.
