THE TURF.

.—,q i ■ — OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUBthe second day. Big race won by merry frank. The winfer meeting o£ the Otaki Maori Itacing Club was concluded yesterday in fine weather, though a high wind blew across the cuurso and the atmosphore was quite sharp'. The- attendance, though nothing like as large as on the previous day, was large, the visitors including Sir James Carroll and the Hon. Te Rangihiroa. There was some improvement in the' going as the wind had the elfect of drying tne course, but it was still on the heavy side, and times were slow. In the majority of the events the fields were large, and interesting racing resulted. The principal event on the day's card waa ■won by Merry Frank, alter an exciting finish with Alnlga, Bill. The totalisator staff was kept busy during the day, but the amount of money handled (c£9163) did not equal last year's second day total of .£11,282, while the total for the two days (,£23,600) was' over .£IOOO less than the amount that passed through tho machine at the last winter meeting. straight was reached and going on won easily by four lengths froni Lady Louisa, who was 'half a. length in front of Hiss Jean. Time, lmin. ssec. NOTES ON THE RACING.' Prosper, who is now 'in capital racing condition, towered above his eleven opponents in the Telegraph Hack Handicap and with Jenkins in the saddle, the son of Advance was made a very stronj; favourite. Tho issue was never in doubt for Prosper went to the front carlv and won with ridiculous ease. He is likely to improve a great deal yd, and may win a good handicap before the -winter is over. C. Jenkins, wife rode the winner, received a round of applause'on returning to weigh in. Backers were unfortunate in' the big raco of the dny, the Iluia Handicap, hea Queen, the favourite, was loft at the post and took no part in the race, and Mulga Bill scarcely had the best of pas-sages, while another fancied candidate, Khamsin, after -getting well away, received a very severe bumping and her chance was extinguished at an early stage of the raco. Sho finished last and pulled up very lame. Lady Moutoa, Bonnie Boy, and Tho Rover were in the van in tho early stages, but they retired on reaching the straight where Bally Shannon looked like winning. Tho final issue lay between Merry Frank and Mulgn Bill and tho latter, who was on the rails, seemed unlucky to lose. On the other hand it must ba said that C. Emerson rode a capital race on the winner. A victory for this clover lightweight horseman was, if anything, overdue. Labour Day and Lady Menschikoff both shaped poorly. _ . Goodwin Park was made favourite for tho Hurdle Race,- with Elfish next in demnnd. Silver Cluse, who had been raised 111b. for -his first day's win, did not accept and in his absence, Goodwin Parlc easily. accounted for, the opposition. The time of the race was very slow in comparison with other events.

Bonnie Boy, who had started in the big race, was the only withdrawal from tho Stewards' Hack, for which Waikchua was made a very warm favourite, carrying nearly a third of the money on the machine. Tho favourite did not get away well, and though ho came with a great rush at the.finish, he had no chance of overhauling Shuja, who won comfortably. Kina, who was in tho lead in the early stages, burst a blood vessel, and had to bo pulled up. Lambton ran in Mr. E. C. Gaisford's colours, having changed hands tho previous day for .£3OO. All acceptors wont to the post' for the Railway Handicap, Makara being installed a better favourite than Bootle. A number of the candidates gave troublo at tho barrier, and dolayed the start for nearly ten minutes, and eventually, when the barrier lifted, Makara was slowest to get going. Bootle was quickest to begin, and led from start to finish, but ho may have been a'trifle lucky to beat Mon Ami. The latter ran up into fonrth position at tho half-mile post, but lost ground as the bend was negotiated. She put in i ''a»t work in tho straight, and got to within ialf a length of Bootle at the judge's box. Makara made up a lot of ground during tho race, but could get no nearer than , si.-tlu The Trentham candidates, Mira and Deploy, never held winning positions. Only sis starters contested the Ohau Welter" Hack Handicap, for which Strategist was made a better favourite than Kilrain. Strategist could get no nearer than third, while Kilrain had to be content with second place behind Blend, who gained a break of a few lengths at the half-mile post, and just lasted long enough to "win by a head. Eoyal Maid finished' nearly a hundred yards behind tho other horses. No. fewer than fourteen starters contested the Final Hack Scnrry, which was regarded as an easy task for War Queen, an own sister to First Battery. On the first day War Queen had run third in the Maiden Race. When it was seen that Dceley had the mount to-day, tho public invested heavily on the Field Battery mare, and the issue was never in doubt, as she practically won from start to finish. This was the only winner Deeley rode during the day, though three of his mounts had finished second.
