DEATH OF COLONEL ABBOTT.

Abbott died of pneumonia on th steamer lonic, on. tho way to take oharg of tho Christchurch district. Lieut.-Colonel Frederick William Al liott,- D.5.0., was horn in Devonshire ii 18S3, and in later life v;as an engineer b profession. In regard to military matter ho began as a lieutenant in the Victori 3T.ifles '(Auckland) ill 1898, and becam captain in that company in 1890. He wa subsequently appointed captain of one o the companies of tho stti Contingent liorviuj in South Africa; major, 1901; prc woted to command Kinth Contiui;enl ,\vhilo in.the field, Ifay, 1902; lieut.-colonel 1902; Queen's medal, four clasps; Kins' medal, two clasps; D.5.0.; afterwards vis sted Bnglaud. The late Colonel Al)bott had just con pleted a year's training in England, an had not long ago received promotion to district command—the Canterbury Mil. tary District—vice Colonel Hawkins, d< ceased. '
