— »- —— OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB. WINTER MEETING. KHAMSIN WINS RAUKAWA CUP, THREE WINS FOR DEELEY. Fine weather favoured the opening otho Otaki Maori Kacing Club's winte] meeting, which -was attended by a recorr crowd, those present including Sir Jas Carroll. A slight shower of rain fell diir. ing tho afternoon and a cold breeze blow throughout tho day, but the conditions wore far from unpleasant. On account oi tho heavy rains that had fallen tho racing track wus very slushy down the back stretch and in consequence of this the ame's in all of tho events were on the slow side. Tho scratching pen, however, was not .much dn evidence and good field; unci interesting racing were the order oi : tho day. some of the finishes being : very close and ' exciting. ' A ileaturo of tho sport—more noticeablo on account of the heavy going— ivas the success of a number of favourites, though tho winner of Iho Rankawa . Cub (Khamsin), and of the Eahui Han- , ' dicap (Uermia) were outsiders. During th(i day, the leading horseman, B. Deeley, rode three winners and was just beaten ■in another race. , The new silent totalisator, recently installed by the club, was in use for tho first time, but the staff behind the windows found it impossible to accept all the' business offering in the time and : inrge sums'of money were shut out before every race. Notwithstanding this the investments during the day reached the satisfactory total of MlfiM, which is a substantial increase on last year's first day total of 4313.371. NOTES ON THE RACING. In a field of fifteen, Kilrain, from Tilley's Fordell stable, was made a warm favourite for tho Maiden Flat Race, Lanibton being tho only other candidate supported to any great extent. Tho pair iiad the finish to themselves. In the early stages Kilrain was not woll placed, but ho found an opening on tho rails at the home turn, and just got up in time to beat Lambtou by a head. Stockade p.tid War Oueen both showed pace, but failed to see the journey out. lady \ T olga, with Deeley in the saddle, was the actual favourite in thu Flying Hack Handicap, but Gordon Bell and the bracketed pair, Shuja and Piriwai, carried nearly as much money. Deeley always had the favourite near the front, and when tho straight was reached she drew out and won very easily. Katua, who finished second, had only five tickets opposite his name on the totalisator, and he paid ono of the biggest second dividends recorded in recent years. Guy Lawless, Shuja, and Rector Girl lost ground at the start, and never improved much. Piriwai, however, had every chance, but stopped badly over the final furlong. Gordon Bell and Boronia finished close behind the placed horses. Silver Cluse was a strong favourite in the Hurdle Race, find, nicely handled by Murtagh, lie iust squeezed home from Elfish. Asealon made the early running, but was done with at the end of a mile. Elfish then"looked all over a winner, but ho lost a lot of ground at the last fence, and Silver Cluse, who was kept out wide to secure tho good going, ran yip to the Birkenhead gelding and beat him in the run home. Elfish, however, shaped well enough to suggest that he will win before long, and Asealon also gave a pleasing performance. 111 , . J. Jackson, owner of Silver Cluse, was not present to seo his horse win.

The reason why Silver Cluse lost pound at the start was that the barrier, in lifting, struck the jockey (E. Murtagh) and knocked oif his cap and skull protector. Mulga Bill was heavily backed in the Raukawa Cup, but, although it was generally thought that he would be well suited in the heavy going, he failed to finish among the first half-dozen. Khamsin, who was heavily supported in her Wanganui engagements a week ago, was comparatively neglected yesterday. She was, however, very well, and found the going exactly to her liking. After a furlong had been covered, she ran to the front, and was never afterwards headed, though she had to be shaken up to stall off a determined challenge by The Rover, who is fast coming back to form, and who paid a surprisingly good dividend, considering his forward running at Waugaimi. Sir Tristram, who has competed in the event on numerous previous occasions, was always prominent, and finished a good tyiird. Sea Queen got well away, but the heavy going was against her, and she was beaten out of a place. Byron ran up among the first half-dozen at the finish, but well-backed candidates, such as Undecided, labour Day, and Lady Moutoa never looked like winning. "Mr. Lance Wood,".owner of tho winner, is duo in Auckland to-day after a trip to the Old Country, and the news of Khamsin's will will greet him on arrival. .

In the Otaki Hack Handicap, Waikehua was made the best favourite of the day, and, going tu the front early, he led until the finish. In the straight, however, ho had to be ridden out to beat Bonnie Boy. The latter came from a long iray back in the straight, and, had ho not run in from the whip, he might have beaten Waikehua.

There was spirited betting in the Rahui Handicap, half-a-dozen candidates carrying big -money, though Makara was a pronounced favourite. Herrnia, Uootle, and Deploy made tho early running, but, at tho finish, there were only two candidates in the race—Makara and Hennia. Makara came from the. ruck in the straight, and Deeley, Tiding an admirable finish, was only beaten by tho narrowest margin. Bootle showed his usual dash in the early part of tho race, but Deploy went with him, and both were beaten before the final stages were reached. Moloch, who was among tho starter.-;, was almost distanced before the winning pest was reached. ;

Parcwanui and Strategist were tho favourite selections for the concluding event, and, when tho machino closed, there was not a great deal to choose between the pair. Parewanui gained a big advantage in a straggling start, and this enabled him to win by a narrow margin from Strategist, who came very fast at the finish. Waipnlcu, Waitoto, and Waiouru were submitted to auction during intervals between the racing at Otaki yesterday afternoon. Waipaku was sold to Mr. F. Spiers, of Foxton, for .£BO, and Waitoto to Mr. F. S. Eoston, of Foxton, for .£lO5. After the first race at Otnki yesterday, Mr. Hartgill hoisted No. 22 in second place, instead of No. 23, and on the numbers being taken down to rectify the mistake, the cage became displaced, and nothing but the winner's number could be seen for pome minutes when a ladder wa« procured and the mechanism set right. AUCKLAND RACES. GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE MEETING. HAUTERE WINS THE BIG EVENT. NAPPER BREAKS HIS LEG AND IS SHOT. IBy TelecraDh—Frees Associations Auckland, June 3. The Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Steeplechase meeting was continued to-day in fine weather. There was a very large attendance. The going was heavy owing to tho rain of the previou.s days. The sum of .£35,596 was invested on the totalisator, an increaso of .£9731 10s. over the same day lnrtt year, making .£5G,073 for the two days, compared with J218,5i5 10s. When the field left tho paddock both Sol and Paritutii were greeted with loud applause from the croud. Paritutu was tho quickest to the first fence, followed by Tui Cakobau, the latter piloting the field up the hill, followed by Paritntu, Dornndo, Glenmore, Okaihau, Blue Mountain, Sol, Napper, llunakaha, with Hautare last. The first fence on the top of the hill brought Tui Cakobau to grief, and Paritutu showed the way down tho hill and into tho course. Racing at the water, Paritutu and Okaihau wc.ro together, just clear of Blue Mountain, Dorando, and Glenmore, who wore bunched. The held wero jumping well, and going along tho back Blue Mountain, Paritutu, Dorando, Okaihau and Qlenniore wero in a heap. This order was maintained as they climbed tho hill the second time. Crossing the double, Okaihau and PariOutu had a length advantage of Dorando and Glenmore, with Blue. Mountain close up, and Hautere, Napper, and Sol following in that order, Hunakaha pulling up. Going along the back the last time, and racing.up the hill, Napper, Glenmore, and Paritutu were together, with Blue Mountain and Okaihau next, while Hautere had crept up closer to the leaders, while Sol pulled up, badly broken down. Tho second fenco on the top of tho hill brought Paritutu to grief, and Glenmore and Napper jumped the second fenco together, three lengths in front of Blue Mountain, with Hautero a similar distance further back. Napper was interfered with by a dog as they camo down the incline, and could be seen hanging out signals of distress as they came to tho wall leading into the straight, whero Hautere had run into third position. Once into tho course proper Hautero put in a phenomenal run, and left Napper and Glenmore as if they wero anchored, and getting over the last fence in good style, won amidst great excitement by half n. dozen lengths from Blue Mountain, with Dorando away third. Glenmore—very

tired—was close up fourth, Okaihau being the only other to finish. Napper was pulled up , after getting over the last fence, when it was found that his leg was broken, and Julian expressed tho opinion that the leg had given way before the fenco was reached. Sol was got back to the paddock with great difficulty, and appeared in a bad way. Time, Bmin. 30?ec. Tho order of favouritism was as follows:—Okaihau and Hautero bracketed, Paritutn, Napoer, Sol, Blue Mountain, Hnnakaha, Glenmore, Dorando, Tui Cakobau.
