EXPORT OF POTATOES.
QUERY BY A GROWER. A correspondent, '"Grower," writes:— "As one among mairv potato-growers in tho Dominion who would be only too glad to take advantage of the high "prices for potatoes now" ruling in Australia, I shall be glad if,you would state for the benefit of myself and others, whether there is any particular difficulty in importing New Zealand-grown -potatoes into the Commonwealth, and what steps have to bo. taken to ensure that they will not be rejected on arrival?' -
The position as it stands at present is that all potato©* which arc exported . to -Australia must be passed by an inspector under the Orchards and Garden Diseases Act, and in addition the grower must make a statutory declaration that to tho best of. his knowledge his farm is free from Irish' blight, and has been so for tho previous twelve months. The shipper is also expected t(i fill in a similar declaration. The Commonwealth duty 011 potatoes is XI per ton. Exporters may also have to face a small inspection feo at the Australian end.
