« : — HOCKEY. THE REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. WELLINGTON BEATEN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , Auckland, June 2. The 1 Auckland and Wellington hockey representatives met on. Saturday, on a heavy ground, and in driving rain. Considering the conditions, the game was a good exhibition. Auckland did most of tko attacking in the first spell, but their shooting was erratic. Just before halftime Barry scored a goal for Auckland after a passing rush and a struggle in Wellington's circle, Wellington improved in tho second spell, adopting tho system of hitting hard and following 'up well—a style of play most suited to the conditions. Auckland's defence, however, was good, and tho state of the ground was against good shooting. Wellington failed to score, and Auckland won by one goal to nil. In a curtain-raiser, the Auckland junior representatives beat the Waikato Association's representatives by four goals to nil, ANOTHER ACCOUNT. A private messago received in Wellingstates as follows:— Auckland won the toss, and from the initial "bully" Wellington gob going with a. fine rush, which Farquharson put an end to. Auckland then became aggressive, but Mason slipped when in shooting range, and the chance was lost. Wellington then moved the scene of action, but Speight defended well and stemmed the onslaught. Again Auckland got near the goal-month, and again Mason slipped at "the" moment. Tho Wellington forwards, who were playing tricky hockey, came goalwards again, but tho goalkeeper kept his goal free. For a few minutes Morpeth (Wellington's 'keeper) was kept going staving off shots. Back rnshea the Yellow and Blacks to the home team's goal, but bunching by the forwards and ultimate collision cost them a goal. Tho players were slipping and sliding on the soft turf, but just before half-time Barry got into the circle, and managed to keep his feet, with .-the Tesult that ho sent, in a stinging shot. Auckland, 1; Wellington, ail! I. On resuming, the rain increased, and tho players tumbled frequently. It was evident that combination and scientific hockey were out of the question, and individual flashes only were the order of the day. And so the battle waged, with no advantage to either. Perhaps the home team.were the more aggressive, but the defence of the Wellington men was good. Time was a welcome relief, and the Auckland men left tho field victors by one goal to nil. ' .
