MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M.) BURNING FOR LAMPAS. OF INTEREST TO FARRIERS. At the Magistrate's Court on. Saturday a charge against Philip Dihert for illtreating a horse by burning its mouth for lampas was dismissed. His Worship found that there was no evidence that the horse had been so treated for lampas. He added that, what the defendant had done was not a wanton or a cruel act, but a treatment with (he object of doing the horse good. Sufficient evidence had, however, been' called to show that burning ' for lampas was cruel, and wrong, and ho suggested that tho S.P.C.A. might ■ take some steps to-notify farriers regarding the law on the subject. TO APPEAR AT WAIHI. Bertriol Smith was accused of having obtained ,Is. from Herbert Howard and ss. from Albert Goldsmith by means of false pretences. Both the charges were made from Karangahape, and defendant was remanded to appear at Waihi. Chief Detective Broberg stated that charges [concerning amounts totalling £S would be made against tho defendant. Mr. A. M. Salek, who appeared for defendant, applied for bail, which was allowed in .£25. FORGERY ALLEGED. William Adolphus Cunningham was charged with having forged the name of James M'Alpine to a cheque for ,£GO drawn on the Union Bank, Dannevirkc, and having uttered the same to Arthur Edward White. „„,.„,,, .• On the application of Chief Detective Broberg a remand till June 5 was granted. Bail (£&0) was allowed. \ OTHER CASES. Margaret M'Hugh was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for having importuned passers-by in Ghuznec Street, and to 12 months' imprisonment because- the was deemed to be a rogue and a vagabond. , ~,.,, Margaret Setter was deemed to be idle and disorderly, and was sent to the Salvation Army Home for six months. •• For insobrietv AVilliam Ballantyne was fined £\. and Frank Flynn 10s. John M'Convillc was charged with bein;* an idle and disorderly nerson and with having broken a prohibition order. The former charge was dismissed, and on the second charge defendant was fined £i, in default 21 days' imprisonment. Mr. A. M. Salek appeared for the defendant. For having broken a prohibition order Peter Muleahy was fined »£3. Kato Ryan, who procured' liquor while she was prohibited, was sent to the Magdalen Homo for six months.
