CITY AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Wellington City Council met last, night. The. Mayor (Mr. 1). M'Laren) presided, and there were present, also. Councillors J. Smith, G. Frost. J. Trevor, A. E. Atkinson. J. Godber, L. M'Kenzio, W. IL V. Barber. E. Tregear, J. Fuller, T(. A. Cameron. A. H. Ilimlinarsli. J. E. Fitzgerald, and K. Fletcher. A deputation of residents of Oriental Bay waited upon the council to ask that (he construction of the sea-ivall nnd esplanade, for which plans have been already drawn, should be expedited. They asked that the work be provided for in tho year's estimates, and ■ that it should not iie done piecemeal. The Mayor informed the deputation that the estimates would be considered at r.ext meeting of the committee. There were many necessary works, and funds wero limited, so that the request for all tho work to be done at once was a serious one. He would undertake that the representations liwdo would bo conveyed to the committee considering the estimates. On the recommendation of the Finance and Property Committee, it was (i(cirtcd that improvements be carried out -\k Hay Street and Telford Terrace, at it ■•:••& of .C 75, and that the council pay half the cost of a pavilion at Kilbirnio reserve — half the cost being .£125. A contribution of .C 25 was granted to the Astronomical Section of the Philosophical Society towards tho cost of an astronomical observatory. The city engineer and the city solicitor were instructed to report on the request of the Makara County Council for a contribution of .£SOO towards the total cost, .CISOO, of making a deviation of tho Ngahauranga Slrcam. It was decided that the ITataitai Municipal Electors' Association be informed, in reply to their complaint regarding the overcrowding of enrs running to IT/ifciitai, that additional cars, when available, should be 'placed o.n the Kilbirnio route. It was decided also that an early morning c;ir be run on the Brooklyn route for one month, the ordinary fares to be charged. The Library Committee reported that they were considering the Library Estimates, and recommended that the sum of .£SOO be set aside for museum uurposes, that ;E250 of this sum, be contributed by the Library Fund, and that the Finance Committed be requested to provide the extra .C 250.
