The Australians began the eighth match of the (our ngniuit last year's champion county—Warwickshire—at liirmingham to-day. At, stumps the county had made--75 ami the Australians hud lost one for 80. The weather was warm, the wicket dry. During the day there was an attendance of 10,000. Smith and Kinneir opened to th.o bowling of M'Laren and Emery. The ■ latter clean bowled Smith in his first over. Charleswoi'th joined Kinneir, and the. pair made a good stand, 50 appearing in thirty-live minutes, and the century in eighty minutes. Tho partnership had added 127 rims, when Charlesworth was taken at third man by Bardsley, off Kelleway. Charlesworth lind given an admirable display, hitting eight -I's. He got 50 in ninety minutes, and gave a, chance to Webster when 25. The 6coro at the luncheon adjournment was two lor 143. Kinneir batted 1)5 minutes for his runs, giving chances at 11 (to Jennings, in the slips, off Jl'linren) and at 10 (to Emery oil his own bowling). Foster was snapped up in the slips by Matthews, off M'Laren. Ho had been at tho wickets half an hour, and his score included four i's. Two limulrcd was posted as tho result of 175 minutes' batting. Baker batted 25 minutes for 10 runs. When he had niado 3 he gave a difficult oliance off Emery's bowling. .Quaifo batted stylishly for' 3-1, being 100 minutes at tho wickets.. At the tea adjournment Warwick had lost seven wickets for 258. Kelleway caught Hands at snort-leg, off Matthews, and Field succumbed in the same over, Gregory taking a catch. Tho innings had extended over 250 minutes. Gregory sent Mayno and Jennings to the wickets to open for Australia. Foster and Field occupied the bowling creases. The former proved his good form by clean bowling Mayne with bis fourth ball —a trimmer. One for none. Macartney joined Jennings, and the pair played out time—G.2o o'clock—when the bad light necessitated stumps being drawn for tho day. The partnership provided some bright and skilful batting, Jennings excelling in cutting and Macartney getting runs all round the wicket. The score was one for 80. South Africa's eighth game, against Northamptonshire, was begun to-day at Northampton. The weather was sultry. The county was tenth on tho list last season.
