CO-OPERATOBS AND MINIMUM WAGE.
London, May 30. The Co-operative Congress, now sitting at Portsmouth, has urged its constituent societies to grant a minimum wngo to their employees.
UNITED STATES TARIFF.
Washington, May .30. The Senate has adopted amendments to tho Steel Bill, placing farm implements on the tarilf free list, repealing Canadian Reciprocity, and reducing the duty on pig iron. A final vote has yet to be awaited.
AIDE-DE-CAMP TO THE KING.
London, May 30. •Admiral Sir Edmund Pot*, Commander-in-Chief on the Mediterranean Station, has succeeded Admiral Sir Lewis Beaumont as the King's principal aide-de-camp.
DECREASED WHEAT YIELD.
Adelaide, May 30. The Government Statist reports that the wheat yield for the past season totalled 20,352,720 bushels, a decrease of 3,992,020 bushels. The average yield per acre was 9.29 bushels, as against 11.57 ■ bushels in tho previous year.
SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE.
Cape Town, May 30. The Defence Bills wero cordially welcomod and read a second time in the Senate. General Smuts, Minister for the Interior (including Mines ami Defence), hinted at the early creation of a separate Ministry of Defence.
. TURCO-ITALIAN WAR.
Rome, May 30. The Government has invited all Italian contractors and foremen workmen in Turkey whom the Porte had exempted from expulsion to return to Italy.
DROUGHT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
Adelaide, May 30. The position iii many districts is becoming serious, owing to the extended dry spell. Large areas of wheat require resowing.
GREECE AND CRETE.
Athens, May 30. The Cretan deputies lave been persuaded not to attempt to take seats in tlio Greek Chambers. [A strong desire for union with Greece exists in Crete, and deputies have been informally elected to the Greek Parliament. If Greece allowed them to take seats, the act would naturally be regarded by Turkey as tantamount to annexation.]

London, May 2D. Tlio inflammation in General Booth's eye, from which a cataract was removed a few days since, is spreading and jeopardising the sight.

London, May 20. The Peninsular anil Oriental Steam Navigation Company has ordered two steamers of the Ballarat type. (11,000 tons gross) for the service to Australia, via Cape.
COFFEE TRUST SUIT.
Washington, May 20. Mr. Knox, Secretary for State, has recommended the* withdrawal of the civil suit against the Coffee Trust, lest complications with Brazil should ensue. President Tuft is considering the suggestion.
SEQUEL TO A TRAGEDY. *
Madrid, May 2!>. In connection with the picture theatre tragedy at Villarral, in which some eighty lives were lost and many persons injured, the proprietor .of the show has been arreted for giving a performance in a building (an old shop) which was unlicensed.
