THE TOTALISATOR.
WHY FRANCE ADOPTED IT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, May 30. The New South Wales Totalisator Commission has considered information submitted on behalf of the Premier of Queensland (Mr. Denham). It was specially obtained from the Queensland AgentGeneral in London (Sir T. Robinson), and states that the abolition of bookmakers in France was decided on in consequence of the occurrence of scandals, and also because of the enormous profits made by the "ring." The consensus of opinion in France, it is stated, is that the abolition jf the bookmakers has had a beneficial and salutary effect, and has not affected horse-breeding, but rather has made for ptraightcr betting.
