BENZINE SHORTAGE.
THE POSITION IN WELLINGTON. From a'recent telegram from Auckland, it might, be surmised that tho shortajo of benzine and motor spirit would soon lay up many cars. liiiymrics in this city yesterday rather contradict, this as jar as Wellington is concerned. There is a. fslini (<i<ji-, no one denies it, but with careful handling there appears to be enough spirit on hand to keep the majority of cars uml (nxi-uibs running as usual. Judging from tho number dashing about llio (own, their owners do nut yet think it necessary to economise in spirits. Wellington dealers rather smile at tho price, sjiiil to liavo been given (20s. to flOs. n case) in Auckland. A number of eases wore, put up to auction recently at Napier, nnil were withdrawn when tbo reserve was not obtained. The bidding went up lo about 18s. per case. Tho Anglo-Saxon is duo to arrive on July I, but it is believed that by speeding her up she could arrive a week earlier with Ij.OftD cases. A small supply is coming in from A us. Iralia, but not enough to alter matters. At the present time small supplies may be obtained in Wellington nt Is. 5Jd. per tiollon for benzine and Is. TJcl, {or motor spirit,
