NATIONAL GALLERY.

s LAST WEEK OF EXHIBITION. It is proposed to close tho exhibition of British pictures one week from to-day, and citizens are therefore reminded to avail themselves without delay of the present opportunity _to view this fine cofiectior. of modern British art. The attendance, at the gallery continues most satisfactory, and, indeed, plainly demonstrates the ,great need that exists in this city for a gbod institution devoted to art. The handsome gift by W- L. Wyllie, R.A., to the people of New' Zealand of a painting of-our Dreadnought New Zealand is attracting much appreciative attention, and it is' a picture that all citizens should make a : special effort to see. The officers of the Post and Telegraph service in the Wellington and middle districts have chosen the fine seascape by Joseph Henderson, R.S.W., entitled "Breezy Weather, Baillantrae," as their presentation to the National Gallery. Some two yeais ago, before the decision .to establish the National Gallery was arrived at, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts received, in .common with the three other art societies of the Dominion, a grant of £500 from Parliament for the purchase of pictures for its own collection. It has now been decided to transfer this sum to the picture fund of the National Gallery, and the £500 has been spent iti the purchase of works of art for the nation. The Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin Societies have 6pent their grants in the, purchase of pictures for their local galleries: The Wellington district branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects has purchased for presentation to the National Gallery a charming water, colour by George Thomson, N.E.A„ "Interior of St. Wulfram's, Abbeville," a most appropriate gift. Tho boys of Croydon School have subscribed for, and presented, to, the National Gallery a fine animal study by Jessie Hall, entitled "The Pool." All subscribers to the fund who have not y£t sent in the amount of their contributions are asked to forward them without deky to the secretary (Mr. J. D.
