A PROTEST.
CHANGING THE HALF-HOLIDAY* The custom of changing U»» <i«s* '-P Oll which the weekly half-holiday falls—Wednesday in Wellington—on the ccension of some celebration or event was tho smbject of a protest by a deputation of i«tailers which interviewed the Mayor (Jtr. D. M'Laron) yesterday. Messrs. ■ \V. Allan, T. Bush, and \V. Siinm voiced the opinions of the deputation, and jointed out that the retailer? should be consulted on these ocensions. This changing of the half-holiday more seriously affected the Wednesday houses than it <lid_ the Saturday Krms, and led to material loss of busiue?:'. In reply, the Mayor assured the deputation that their representations would have his earnest consideration. Hβ had followed precedent in the. matter, and on this particular occasion, the visit of General Bnden-Powell, he had been approached by General Godley and Mr. H. N. M'Leod and oihers interested in the lioy Scout movement. In future hu would toe that tho views of representative bodies wore obtained when the qucstion of chanifing tho doy arose.
