PALMERSTON BAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, May 27.' Much interest is being manifested in Hie banners' Union banquet, which is to be held on Tuesday night. Among tho speakers expected is the Premier. Arrangements in connection with the Manawatu A. ami P. Association's National Dairy Show (to be held next month) arc proceeding. At a meeting of the Dairy Show Committee on Saturday a letter was received from Hie Ngaire Dairy Company, that the half-ton clieeso was in course of manufacture, and that Xl 5 in coins had been distributed in it. The chairman, Mayor Dunk, reported that tho whole of the spaco in the machinery had been taken up, and difficulty was being experienced in meeting the demand-for space. Tho poultry division promised to bo a marked improvement on past shows, and arrangements were being made with tho Wellington Poultry Society for the loan of additional pens. The ''right" of the sheen-guessing competition was sold to Mr. T. A. Durran for .£2O. The chairman and Messrs. J. A. M'G'rea, D. Thomas, A. Sutherland, T. It. Hoddcr, and H. I). Buchanan were appointed a sub-committee to arrange a turnip-growing competition, as suggested by Messrs. Nathan and Co. It was decided to invite members of Parliament to the show. Messrs. B. Latosh, A. G. Pilmcr. J. A. Nash, T. W. Kirk, T. Horton, A Booth, and A. M'Pherson have consented to act as judges at the Dairy Show. The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened to-day before his Honour Mr. Justice Chapman, who stated that the district appeared to be particularly free from crime on this occasion, there being only fivo cases. Two sexual cases wero tho only really serious ones. Harry Dennett was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, the sentence to be cumulative "with one which lie is at present serving for escaping from custody at Tnihnpc. The case against Robert Russell, charged with having assaulted his wife, so as to cau?o her actual bodily harm, broke down, on account of (he wife declining lo give evidence against accused. John Duncan was found guilty of assaulting a girl six years of age at Hunterville, sontenco being deferred.
