Corazon was scratched for all events at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting' at 3 p.m. on Thursday last. _lf. Thompson, who won the last Grand National Steeplechase on Paritr.iu, has been retained to ride the old Castor gelding in his coming winter engagements. Lovell was very distressed after running iii tiie Wanganui Steeplechase last Thursday, and he will probably be operated upon for respiratory trouble before lie again sports silk. .Tlio A'nckliwid horseman. B. Donley, arrived from Wanganui on Saturday night, and leaves lor Christchurch this evening on n business trip. C. Emerson will be a! tho Otaki meeting next Saturday and Monday. He has ten engaged to ride St. Felix,* Mon Ami,' Aratiatia, and other horses. Woolioomooloo's withdrawal from the' Grout Northern Hurdles was duo to the fact that he went wrong at Wanganui last week. This was most unfortunate as tiie hurdle horse had been doing good work on the tracks and looked like returning to h'.s best form. As Dearest 'failed to show form at Oamaru, it ?s possible that.she may not be sent on to Dunedin to fulfil her engagements there on Saturday and Monday next. The Rover improved with his first day's race at Wanianui. and made a fair showing in the Empire Handicap on Friday. He ought to strike form allv dav now. "Prosper, who won the Farewell Hack Race at Wanganui, looked a. great deal better than he did nt the Egmout fixture, and lie will probably win a few more races before the weight steps him. Golden Loop, who was among the starters in the May Hurdles at Wanganui, lsad not done much schooling previous to contesting that race, and he will most likelv improve considerably with flint race. He jumped well throughout, and was running in a prominent position for tho first few furlongs until something interfered with him. Endowed as ho is with plenty of pace, he ought to be equal to winning a good liurdle race. During the past week Mr. .r. A. Buckley disposed of the iwo-yoav-o!d Champagne to a South Island sportsman. From England comes word of tho death of Major Fife, who bred Airs and Graces, with whom the Sato Mr. W. T. Jones won the Oaks in 183 S. Long Set, winner of the Lincolnshire Handicap in March, also won the Newbury Spring Cup last, month. The skeleton of Flying Fox, tho famous racehorse which was sold to M. Edmond Bianc by the Duke of Westminster for stud purposes, iias (says "The Times" Paris correspondent) been presented to the Saumur Equine Museum. This season tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter meeting is limited to two days. It begins on Saturday and ends en Monday. There will be racing, at "Otaki and Dunedin on tho same days. Good report?; of the luiramu hurdler Napper are still in circulation, and he is being we'il supported for tho jumping events at Elierslie. W. J. Porter, who recently returned to New Zealand from Melbourne, is being offered plenty of riding and may elect to stop in the Dominion for some time yet. He had several mounts at the Wanganrii meeting last week. Although B. Deeley has now ridden 80 winners during tho present season, there does not seem to be much probability of his exceeding C. Jenkins's record total of 88.
