(From Our Special Correspondents) . * — OTAKI. Two -hockey matches were played here on Wednesday, when the Otnki and Te Horo (men's team) had an even and stubborn contest, the game eveutually ending in a draw—three goals each. The Otaki Ladies defeated Manakau, after a hard game, by a gonl to nil. Ralnii and Kimberley (men) met nt Levin, when the latter unexpectedly won, beating last year's champions by a goal to nil. The Tainui Ladies (Otaki) defeated Shannon by six goals to nil. Mrs. Herbert Bright, who recently returned from a trip to the South Island, has been seriously indisposed for the past fortnight. The funeral of the late Mrs. Macdonald took place on Thursday afternoon, when several relatives and friends followed to'the graveside. Tho C.E.M.S. members and friends held their annual "social" on Wednesday night in the Druids' Hall, when all spent a. pleasant nnd profitable evening. Mr. J. Honore, of Hnwke's Bay, has purchased a farm at Waihoanga. SHANNON. The local hockey team was defeated by Manakau on Wednesday afternoon at Shannon by i goals to 2. Tho Rev. Mr. C. Palmer, of the local team, received a severe blow. Mr. C. H. Gardiner, vice-president, occupied. the chair at the weekly meeting of the Debating Society, when the item on the syllabus was "Readings from Favourite- Authors." Amongst those who contributed were:—Messrs. Ritchie (E. Maokay). Eastwood (Goldsmith), J. J. Trainer (Emerson), Kxnl (Dickens), M'Millnn (Mark Twain), Rev. Mr. M'Kenzie. (Browning), Honsman (original verses), Sol by (H. Lawson), n.nd Mrs. Laurvig. There was a good attendance of members. Next Tuesday Mr., M'Millan will move:—"That education increases happiness," and Mr. W. Clayton will oppose the motion.^ Mr. Fargher presided at a meeting of the Association Football Club in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday nipht. Mr. Seiby retired from the general committee, and was appointed to the selection committee in place of Mr. Durham, who took the former's place on the general committee, and the name of Mr. Bromv ley was added to the selection commitA tee. Mr. Bromley has presented the club'with a match ball and inflator. A match is likely to be arranged for June 3.
