4 IX THE UNIVERSITY. In the Gazette of this week are published tho terms and conditions on which university bursaries, tenable at a university college or other institution recognised by the l.mvorsity of Now Zealand, and entitling the holders to free, university education, are, subject to the necessary annual appropriation by Parliament, to be awarded. A bursary may be awarded on the recommendation of the University of New Zealand to any porson of either sex who, being a matriculated student of the University of New Zealand, ami being resident in New Zealand for ono year immediately preceding the date of application for a bursary:— (n) Satisfies tho conditions for a University Junior Scholarship, or for a Senior National Scholarship, and obtains "credit" at the examination for euch scholarships; or (u) Has within one year and six months immediately preceding gained a higher leaving certificate; or
(c) Has within one yesr and six months immediately preceding completed his term of service as a pupil teacher or probationer in some education district in accordance with regulations and to tho satisfaction of thti JOducation Hoard ot that district, and declares his intention of entering a recognised training college on tho completion of the tenure of his bursary; or (d) Has completed his course of training at a recognised training college; or (e) Has gained a teachers' certificate of a class not lower than Class C. Tho term of a bursarv shall be three years if tho holder eo long fulfils tho prescribed conditions. Provided that on a report from the Professorial Board tho Minister may extend any bursary for one year longer. ' It shall not. be tenable with a University Junior Scholarship, a Senior National Scholarship, or any other scholarship, exhibition, or bursary, the value of which exceeds J320 a year. Bursaries may be held at any university college or at a school of agriculture recognised by the University. In nil other respects the holder of a bursary must comply with the conditions prescribed in tho tho holder of a Senior National Scholar, ships, and generally what is permitted to the lioder of a Senior National Scholarship may be permitted to tho holder of a bursary; provided that the holder of a bursary under paragraph (c), (d), or (e) above-noted must follow a course in arts, science, or agriculture. There shall bo paid to, or on behalf of, each holder of a bursary the amount of
the fees payable by him to the university college in respect to such classes as tho Professorial Board shall approvo for him, and, in addition, the university fees for tho degree examinations for which he sits, up to £20. On the receipt of an unfavourable report on the holder of a bursary from the Professorial Board, or from the council of the university college attended, tho tenure of the bursary shall be forthwith determined.
