Eastwind, Throve, Lady Volga, and Royal Simon followed in thnt order. Time, linin. 17 sec, NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Tclograph.—Special Reporter.) Wanoanui, May 21. Splendid weather marked the second day of tho Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter meeting, and a successful day's racing was witnessed by a big crowd of people. As on the first day, several outsiders won, and Tho Native and Eed Lupin were the only actual favourites which got home. Khamsin was withdrawn from the Winter Oats Handicap and reserved for tho Empire Handicap later in the day. Although Allurement liad won comfortably on the first day, and appeared to be none the worse for her race, sho was comparatively neglected on the totalizator. Merry Frank and Mafcara were the actual favourites, while St. Toney and Gladiolo were also well backed. Allurement was in front from the start, and, though hotly challenged by Merry Frank in the straight, she had sufficient in reserve to win by a long neck. St. Toney and Makara ran disappointingly. Ineiiru was running in third position when half the distance had been covered, hut eho fell away in the straight and finished last. Bonny Boy, with Jenkins in the saddle, was made a solid favourite for the Balgownie Hack Handicap, but, after apparently having everything in his favour during the running of the race, he was fairly beaten by Draft and Wnikehua. Most of the early running was made by Waitoto, who, however, faded right out of a place at the finish. Antarctic was not produced in the Grandstand Steeples. Mr. W. B. Tuck has purchased a controlling interest in the Salvadan gelding, who will carry new colours when next he starts. Backers had some difficulty in finding a favourite for the Steeples, and, when the machine closed, there was very little difference between the investments on Glenmore, Sir Lethe, Hautere, Dorando, nnd Whakaweira. Glenmore fell at the double in front of the stand, Drudgery having previously come to grief at one of the crush fences. Whakaweira jumped bauly the whole way, and eventually ran off at the end of two miles. Hβ was probably suffering from the effects of his fall on the first day. Compass got round safely, but that is Iho best that can "be Eaid of his performance. Tho race resolved itself into a match between Sir Lethe, Dorando, and Eautere. • Once again Sir Lethe failed to stay, and left Dorando and Hautero to fight out the finish. Both tho last-named horses had changed jockeys, Young being pu Dorando, and Deerey on Hautere. Dorando was well in front three furlongs from home, when ho hit a fence, and Young, who was "Sloaning" him, made a marvellous recovery, alter being sent out on tho horse's neck. Still, the mishap probably cost the horse the race, for Sir Lethe passed him again, and Hautere caught up several lengths. Dorando quickly overtook Sir Lethe, but was unable to shako off Hautere, who won by half a length. Both jockeys on the first two horses rode capital races, and Young succeeded in keeping Dorando in a forward position the whole way. The accident, however, which cost the horse tho race, raised tho question .as to whether the American scat is an advantage to the best jockey over big country. Had Young been riding Dorando with long leathers, it is not likely that he would have lost bo much time in getting back to his seat. „ In a field of eleven, Tc Roti was made a strong favourite for the Rata Hack Hurdles, but he was apparently well beaten when he fell three furlongs from home. His jumping was not nearly as good as it was on the first day, when tho hard race must have had an ill effect on him. Bismarck, who had finished strongly in third place on the first day, was tailed off in the early stages of to-day's race, but he finished c great race, and won by a couple of lengths from Sphinx. Shortly before the start of tho race it was lvJiispered that there was a' heavy commission for Sphinx away from the course, and in consequence of this the Bluejacket mare was a [jood second favourite. A quarter of a mile from home the race appeared to be in her keeping, but sho failed to withstand Bismarck's final challenge. Nedra, Canadian, and Dogger Bank, finished next to tho placed horses.. Those who may havo fancied that Outlander was likely to distinguish himself in any of the season's big hurdle events • will probably have altered their opinion after his inglorious displays at Wanganui. All the acceptors went to the post for the May Hurdles, Tho Native and Euroco being the popular fancies, while Paisano was the absolute outsider of the field. When Euroco was doing his preliminary ho ran into a motor-car which happened to bo standing on the outside of tho course. Murtagh was unseated by the impact, and Euroco sustained a nasty cut on tho off foreleg. He took his place among the starters, but the beat which he could do was to finish fourth. On the first day's running the race certainly looked an easy task for The Native, and so it proved, for he ran to tho front in the first furlong and never afterwards gave any of his opponents a chance. At tho finish he was six lengths, or more, ahead of Stevens, who was well clear of Kauroa. Koran came down threo furlong 3 from home, but neither horse nor rider were much tho worse for the mishap. Sandy Paul and Seaman both shaped creditably. Khamsin looked very sore when doing her preliminary prior to the Empire Handicap, but yet she was nearly as v,-ell backed as the favourite, Red Lupin. The latter led from start to finish, and won comfortably from Con the Shaughraun and Mescal, while Khamsin could finish no nearer than sixth. Mcrrivonlia, jvho was tailed off in tho early stages, finished foiuth, just ahead of Byron. A good sized field turned out for the concluding event, and the investments were heavier than for any other race at the meeting. Thrave and St. Gate carried the bulk of the money, but the former was ben ten out of a place, while St. Gate had to bo content with second to Prosper, who is in tho same stable as Allurement, and who thus gave Trainer Joniieson his third win at tho meeting, W. Bell, J. O'Shea, and J. Decrey each rode two winners at tho meeting , . WINNING OWNERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) - Wanganui, May 24. The following is the list, of winning owners:— J. Amongst the hurdlers Jack Ashore was better suited with the extra two furlongs in to-day's race, and outstaying tho field, and having all the luck, ho won very comfortably at the finish. King Try and Mercedo again pursued their cut-throat tactics, and the former, jumping badly, took a lot out of himself. Mercedo fell at;the six furlongs post, when Jack A'-noro Jumped to the front, and was not again headed. It was a Rood Tace for secoM place between Red, White, and Blue and Master Paul, but tho mare womcl gained that position more easily had sho not got into a fence. Qlenowl, who has been nothing if no,, consistent in his performances, wjs, in tho absence of Bon Soir, made a got a favourite in the Shorts, and he won rice ly, after getting a good run tho i> hole way. The second horse might bate re versed positions with tlie winner hid to not caught the tapes at tho barrier rise, being sent back to last place. Foam Flake also got tangled up in tho tapus, and spoilt any chance she had. Mount Victoria was a very hot favotnite in the Electric Handicap of four furlongs. A good start was deemeu by most of the riders to be essential, and accordingly the field several times approached tho 'tapes at a gallop. After two false starts, the barrier was skied, but Mount Victoria did not go with tHo others, Lupulito was quickly in charge, and was able to keep there ail tho whole way, despite challenges by Taft, Respond, and Tenterhook. M'Kay, the rider of Lupulite, was fined Jβ for breaking the tapes. Palisade was the only withdrawal from the Open Mile. The presence of Bandiera added interest to this event, mm the chestnut colt was made a warm favourite, with Dearest next in demand. Tho latter was quickest to find her feet, and led down the back, with Bandiera un'der a pull close up. At the bottom of tho straight, the field bunched, and the colours of The Cornet, Bandiera, lonnhauser, and True Knisht were prominent. The last-named finished very strongly, nnd beat Tannhanser by a coup 6 of lengths, with the favourite in third position. Then came The Cornet and Dearest. Gold Coin stumbled after passing the post, and got rid of his rider, who escaped unhurt. Several of the runners left in the five furlong hack rare came in for solid support, includin.2 Early Morn. Ceylon, and Aphaea. The last-'.mmed began on the extreme outside, nnd remained thevo throughout the rnce. Cevlon was the quickest to tjeuin. but Manillus soon lientlfed her. and ran home a comfortable winner. The race yesterday must have worked a big improvement in the winner, as to-rlav ho saw nut tho finish well, and won 'easily. Early Morn, who is very small, was in her usual position of runner up. , , . Rome hpnvy unernlation was indulged ir, in the Open Welter, and the machine suggested Hint the race was a very good one. Seranliic led at tho start vi*n Kilts and Kilmenv next, and Geniu , v io was cut out early in the race. Th l leader was dono with at the him, xihoifl Kilts came' through and won from Idl meny. who got up on the rails, ar I mst beat' Mnmlala for second money. Gen.us wan fourth. „ There were no defections from t • Members' Handicap, with which th* meet itie concluded. Lupulite, who spoilt the start of the Electric Handicap, did the same thing in the five furlong event, though in a different war. Ho jumped across Gntinn and Poii-nde at the start., and completely spoiled their cli.mces. Blue take. Stcpmaid. and Mount Yietnvin were the first io show out, with Pilgrim's Way handy. Mount Victoria vns on '-he outside, and ran wide, leavine Blue T.nke first into tho straight. Pilgrim's Way nhallenged strongly, but. the black mare held her own, and won by a lonath. Mount Victoria was just clear of Stepmaid.
