A successful land sale took place yesterday, when a block of residential sites situated about a mil® from the Post Office, on tho way to Stortford Lodge, was submitted to auction. Thirty-four iisitesiout of 5i wea'o sold at a! total'price of .£.1205. A .young ma® .named Chas. King, aged about 21 years, and employed as a porter at the Stortford lodge Hotel, took a Bleeping draught on Monday evening, and failed to awake on Tuesday. He had been suffering from insomnia, and on Monday evening he came into town, and went to one of the picture .shows, returning to the hotel at about 8.30 p.m. or 9 p.m. Ho remained talking with other members of the household in tho kitchen, and retired to his bedroom at about 10 p.m., taking with him a sleeping draught. On Tuesday all efforts to awaken him were in vnin, and on Wednesday evening he died at a private hospital, to which he had been removed. An inquest will be held. The Hastings Philharmonic Society held a very successful concert at the Princess Theatre on Wednesday night, the building being crowded. "The singing of Mrs. Gower Burns, of Christchurch, delighted the audience, as did the violin items contributed by MissAva Symons. The usual winter rains are tardy in making their'appearance in Hawke's Bay. In fact there has been no real soilsoaking rain since last winter. The spring and summer were very dry, and the autumn, months only gave an occasional shower. AVinter feed will consequently be scarce here, as the frosts have commenced.
