■■I. ■ • 10-1 - A PROBLEM AT LEVIN. A. deputation consisting of Messrs. B. E. Gardener (Mayor of Levin} and E. S. Lancaster (president, of tho Levin Chamber of Commerce) waited upen the Prime Minister (the- Hon. T. Mackenzie) yesterday, to ask that the Government should acquire and reclaim some waste areas, adjacent to Ltwiu, v which are being ruined by drifting sand. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., introduced flio deputation.

Mr. Gardener stated that some years ago a block of Sand on the coast-lino and extending; to the beach, was practically a grass paddock. During the last twenty years sand had continually drifted in. and had done serious damage. The land was owned by Natives, Tlic deputation suggested that tho Government should acquire the block principally affected, with the object of reclaiming and planting it. The area in question was aboiu 20r,0 acres, and the price would probably not exceed ss. per acre. lie thought that the Natives would probably consent to the price of tho land boi.tig expended id lupin and tree-planting. Many acres . v-ere being swallowed up aiiinually by these drifts, but if the land were planted it would became reproductive m time. Under tho Sand Drift Act t.io Government could delegate power, in a matter of this kind, to a loca: authoruy which, in this c«u-o» would bo the Horowiienua County Council. Mr. Lancaster . said that sand drxtls which wevo restricted 20 years ago to a few chains had extended in. tho interval over an area of miles, rho beautiful Horowhenua Lake was threatened, and even the town of Levin itscii. lnc land, if reclaimed, would form a valuable space for military training or some such purpose. , , .
