COURT OF COMPENSATION.
M'LEOD CLAIM, AMOUNT AWARDED, £2360. . Yesterday afternoon the Compensation Court (Mr. Justice Chapman, president, and Messrs. W. M. H'annay and W. 0. Foster, assessors) gave judgment in the claim made by Hector X. .M'l.eod against the Wellington Harbour Hoard for .£10.S(!0 as compensation for Miramar laud taken by the board for reclamation purposes. The Court' held that the special valuo placed upon the land as u sito for a brickmaking establishment, gravel quarry, etc., had not been sustained. The claim had had to be regarded as one relating to land suitable for residential purposes, with whatever additional value the land might derive from being situated near a wharf. Interest would be allowed subject to a deduction in respect of the occupation of a house by claimant, and sums paid to mortgagees. The sum awarded was .£2360 in all, which was on the basis of £22b0 for the land. ,£52 ]os. was payable by the respective parties to each assessor. Mr. C. 1\ Skerrett, K.C., with him Mr. M. M.vors, appeared for the claimant; and Mr. T. 8. Weston, with him Mr. T. Neave, for the Harbour Board. Mentioning the question of costs, Mr. Weston said that the claimant had not succeeded in his special claim. His Honour said that. the Court hod considered that matter very fully, and that if it had had any decision to give it would havo given H. Air. Myers said it amounted to the parties paying their own costs. His Honour assented.
