Pahiatua, May 22, A charge'brought against Michael Fill! gorald, license,! of the Post Office Hotel •it Pahiatua, of exposing liquor- for salo during prohibited hours on March 7 was dismissed to-day. Four men had been found in tho bar on the Sunday in question, and defendant pleaded that ho waa only "shouting" his guests, and thought Hint ho had a right to do so. Jlr L. G. Reid, S.M., in delivering reserved judgment to-dav, quoted decisions oi Justices Cooper and Williams, and pointed out that, in Fitz K craid's ease, ™. n '- 10 P°'"!e knocked at the slide-door ot tlic bar, the candle was blown out. He did not thmk that there had been sufficient exposure,, and there must be ex-po-sure 111 an ordinary sense. He remarked that if the proceedings had been taken 111 a different way, tho results might hav« been somewhat different.

After nearly an hour's retirement the jury brought in a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to lenieucv owing to tho provocation tho prisoner had received. Sentence was deferred. A man named Richard Wili-on was charged with having assaulted a little girl in Albert Park, and was sentenced to five year? imprisonment, with hard labour. DEATH OF A YOUNG WOMAN. Auckland, May 22. The death of a young woman named ; Phyllis Adelaide French, 20 years of age, in a private hospital in Grafton Head, on April 20 last, formed the subject' for a prolonged coronial inquiry to-day. The evidence of the medical witnesses" was lo the effect that death was caused by an illegal operation. The inquest was not concluded this evening, and was adjourned until to-morrow, FORTY POUNDS FOR SANDWICHES. Auckland, May 22. A bundle of neatly-cut sandwiches, very edible looking, was the principal exhibit for one case heard before Mr. Kettle, S.M., in the Court yesterday. T. B. O'Connor and Jno. Sinclair claimed the sum of .£4O ss. from Harry H. Hnvr for sandwiches supplied to the totatisator staff at the recent race meeting. .Tho point in dispute was in regard to tho prices. The plaintiffs claimed 3s. Gd. per dozen for 200 dozen, and tho defendant only paid at the rate of Is: 6d. per dozen. A good deal of evidence was called, both. plaintiffs contending that their price was reasonable and was tho usual one. Witnesses also gave details of tho'lots supplied each day. The case was adjourned until Friday, GUN CHAMPIONSHIPS, m , , Wanganui, May 22. Tho Wanganui Gun Club's New Zeo» land championship meeting concluded today in fair weather. J. White and R. J. King tied for the championship with 19 birds, White winning tho shoot-on*. The third money was divided among 15. K. King, D. A. Fraser, H. Collins, E. F. Stead, H. Douglas, and H. Bailey. . In addition to tho Opera House and the Lyceum, a new picture theatre named the King's was opened on Monday night. Tauranga, May 22, At the Court this morning Tuhcrcroo, Tarnati, a young Native, pleaded guilty to a criminal assault on a young woman on Saturday night, and was committed to the Auckland Supremo Court for sentence. IRATE BRIGADESMEN. Du nod in, May 22. Members of the City Fire Brigade are very indignant over the appointment of an outsider to tho position of superintendent. They point; out that the, appointment means that instead of three promotions of local men there will now lie 110110. At a meeting of members of the brigade last night, a motion expressing indignation was minn'mous-ly passed. They-cited the Wellington City ! Couucil's attitude in 'promoting members of the Wellington Brigade as an exainplo that should have been followed by the Duncdiu Fire Board, MATAKANA-PLAINTIFF WINS. x. New Plymouth, May 22. Judgment was given this morning in tho celebrated Mntakana Island case, in which W. C. Robinson sued Henry Sanson for specific performance. Tho hearing occupied several daya in the Supreme Court here, a,ud was afterwards argued in Wellington. Judgment goes for plaintiff, with costs on tho highest scale. THE GQSCQMB CASE. Christchurch, May 22. At the Magistrate's Court this morn* ing. Frank Goscomb was committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter arising out of the evidence given at tho inquest on the death of his wife. This is the case in which revelations were made concerning the ueo of methylated' spirits as a beverage.
