MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May 22. At its meeting last, night, tho Ma'stcilon Borough Council dealt with the estimates for the ensuing year. The honorarium of the Mayor was again fixed at .£IOO. The. vote for road maintenance was .C2OOO. The total amount of (he appropriation for the year is M77G. The Masterton Amateur Operatic Society has made an excellent start witli tho rehearsals of tho opera "H.M.S. Pinafore." Mr. Thomas Wagg hns given notice to move at tho next meeting of the Trust Lands Trustees (hat a sum of .£IOO bo voted for the furnishing of the new Assembly Hall at tho District High School. A proposal is being made to take u poll on the question of altering the half-holi-day in Masterton from Thursday to Saturday. The Employers' Association stronglv disapproves of this proposal, and has sent (he following resolution to tho Borough Council;—" That in tho best interests of the town and district-, Thursday is tho most .suitable day for the weekly half, holiday,
The past year has been the most successful in the history of Hie Masterton Municipal Gasworks, n. credit of .£1201) remaining after allowing for interest, sinking fund, and maintenance.
A preliminary meeting of the sub-com-mittee of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, when valuable data, concerning tho proposed , Masicrtou to IVaipnkurau railway -was supplied by Mr. Kli Smith. Another meeting is to bo held at an early date.
Tho Mayor, speaking mi the estimates at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, stated that he anticipated a considerable increase in tho revenue of the borough during tho ensuing year. A freak of nature in the shape of ,i. fullgrown sheep with five legs was discovered at the Waingawa freezing works veslerday. Sixteen members of tho Masterton Harriers Club held a preliminary run last evening. The Masterton Borough Council decided las!, night to forward a letter to the Minister for Hallways in reference to the shortage of trucks, which is causing a consider, able difficulty in connection with tho supply of coal to the municipal ga-wovk.-. A number of friends of Mr. and lire \Y. T. Knbin* a.-'embled last evening to honour the occasion of their golden wedding. The health of the aged couple was drunk.
