Marylebone, batted first, Fry and Douglas facing the attack of Minnett and Emery. The batsmen were uncomfortable, opening flukily, Fry making two dangerous strokes in the first over, whilo his partner narrowly escaped being caught on ,two occasions off rising balls.
Fry was the first to go, Emery beating him with a ball that kept low and made | pace from tho pitch. Douglas was joined by Spooner, and the pair carried the total to 85, when Douglas snicked Kelleway to Matthews at second slip. Two for 85. The pitch was apparently not so good as it looked, as several balls got up dangerously. _ • Seventy appeared ns the result of nil hour's play, and a century after 100 minutes. The batsmen were Spooner and Warner, but the latter did not last long. After getting 9, he touched a rising ball, which flew off tho shoulder of the bat to Minnett, fielding third man. Two wickets to Kelleway. The luncheon adjournment was taken at this stage. After the adjournment, Hazlitt replaced Emery, Spooner having been joined by Hearne. Tho latter failed to stop one from Kelleway, and shortly after the s.-.me bowler removed Spooner's middle stump. Five for 128.
Pen-in and Burn were now associated. The former was twenty minutes making a single. Then ho got over tho top of a half-volley from Hazlitt, and Kelleway bagged Burns's wicket for a similar contribution. Seven for 152. Littlejohn was cleverly caught low down in the slips off Hazlitt. , Mead, who mado 19, was missed when 18, by Matthews, off Kelleway, amd Thompson succumbed to a "skier." Tho innings had lasted 195 minutes. The last seven wickets fell in eiglify minutes, thanks to some splendid bowling and smart fielding. Tho wicket "helped tho attack somewhat. When stumps wero drawn the Colonials had 201 up for the loss of only two wickets—Mayne and Gregory's. UNBEATEN PARTNERSHIP. Mayne accompanied his captain to the wickets, but tho partnership was not a lengthy one, the South Australian being smartly taken at the wickets off Thompson. One for 15. Gregory followed him immediately, Douglas knocking back his middle stump. Two for 15. Then Bardsley and Macartney set up an unbeaten partnership. Tho latter showed brilliant form all round the wicket. "When 57 ho gave a hard chance to Mead in tho slips, off Douglas. Splendid cutting and leg-hitfir.g characterised Bardsle.v's innings, tlio lefthander reaching tho half-century in fifty minutes. Fifty was posted as tho result of forty minutes' play. Both men mastered the weak bowling tho century appearing in 75 minutes, and 200 in 125 minutes. With tho score 201, Bardsley 9S and Macartney 73, both not out, stumps were drawn for the day.
