1 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, May 21. Mr. C. G. Warner, who has resigned as superintendent o£ .the Palmerston Fire Brigade to tako'np a similar position in Christchurch,. leaves for that city to-mor-row. lie was entertained at a farewell "social" by members of the local brigade last night. During tho evening Mr. Warner was presented with a framed photograph of members of tho brigade/ a two years' service: bar,-and a silver-mounted umbrella. A number of tca.sts were honoured, and • a programme of vocal items rendered. Tho civil list nt the Supreme Court sittings to be held here next week is a lengthy one, embracing between thirty ana forty eases. There are also nine divorce cases. Tho Manawatu Rugby Union has decided to play the first representative match of the season against Horowhenua at Levin on June 8. An examination is now proceeding hero for the promotion of the New Zealand Staff Corps, the examining board comprising Major Hume, awl Captains Hamilton and Bosworth. The candidates sitting are Captains Whyte and IJobinson. Lieuts. Richardson, Cardale, Morrison, Skelley, and Braddell. A card tournament for the Druids' shield, which took place last night between tho Bunnythorpe Lodge of Oddfellows and the local Foresters' Court, was won by the latter by 22 to IS. The Public Trustee, Dr. Fitchett, was in Palmerston yesterday, and in company with the Mayor and Councillor Armstrong examined a section of land in North Street, controlled by the Public Trust, which it is desired to secure as a recreation ground. The local technical school is arranging for a display of the work constructed thero during tho past year.
