CANNED MULLET.
SBy Telegraph—Press Asßoe'fttlois.i Auckland, Hay 20. For nearly a year canned mullet has been unprocurable except, in very meagre quantities, and Hie industry is practically a|: a stand-till. Up till about 12 months ago local wholesale merchants were easily dispo.-ing of the output of three factories, which were engaged in putting up this line, but since, as suplies have almost ceased, agents have bom inundated with orders and inquiries. A local agent for one of the be=t-known brands stated recently that, if he had 10,000 eases at the present time, lie would experience no difficulty whatever in disposing cf them. Opinions differ somewhat as to (ho reason for scarcity of tinned fish, ft has bren stated in some quarters that a consignment by rail of the fresh fish packed in ice is now pos-ibie f;x>m districts where if is caught. Fishermen, instead of selling to the factory, are sending their catches to town to be sold bailie fish dealers ami hawkers. On the other hand, it is slated by large canners who have factories at Balley-ou-Kaipara, Russell, and UeUv.isville that the fish are not there to bo caught in .sufficient quantities for fanning.
