Professor Mallacla, accompanied by a ■ young expert named Varvazze, made an exploration of the interior of Mount Vesuvius. They wore lowered a thousand feet to the bottom of the crater, and collected specimens of minerals. They also photographed avalanches. Showers of red-hot cinders fell close to ' l them fwom different parts while they ' wer« in the crater.
