At the monthly meeting of the Welling-' ton Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held yesterday a discussion took place on tho Local Government Bill. Mr. Geo. London said he thought there was something that should bo said. Ho referred to the fact that the adoption by Parliament o? the Bill would mean tho extinction of the board. There had been a. good deal eaid about tho lack of economy, but lie very much doubted if a local government !»dy could manage the affairs any better or more economically than at present. He would move—"That the Local Government Bill was a retrograde measure which would bring about the extinction of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and other similarly constituted boards." Mr. H. Fletcher said that h* had in another place summed up tho Bill in ons woid—it was an "abortion." Members: "Oh! Oh!" lit-. David M'Larcn declared himself against the measure, as did several other, members of the board. Mr. F. T. Moore asked why not admit that the work was really done by the officials. The members wer« connected with the board v-ear after year, and sanctioned anything flic officials liked to ask, until there was nothing much left to ask for. He .believed in much which the Bill contained. Messrs. Robertson, R. C. Kirk, arid J. W. M'Ewen also spoke in condemnation of the adoption of the Bill. The motion was adopted.
