PURCHASE OP PICTURES. The Picture Purchase Fund for the National Gallery is making steady progress and there is little doubt but that the full amount of .£SOOO will be raised. The promoters hope be in a position within tile next few days to announce one or two substantial.gifts and it is expected that these will enable the 'last lap" to be entered upon l>oforc tho week is out. The public interest in the exhibition of British pictures shows no sign of slackening and indeed the attendances throughout afford tho clearest evidence of the need for a good art gallery in the Empire City. It may he of interest to the citizens of Wellington to know that their example is being followed by the people of Duncdin who hope to raise from .£IOOO to JiISOO by the time the exhibition of British pictures open in the southern city.
'tlie Life Class of the Arts Club has selected as its presentation to the National Gallery three of the, fine etchings by Frank Brasigwyn, A.E.A., Ititely pbced on exhibition at the gallery. They ore: "Tho Bent Yard, Venice," "The Tow' Rope," and 'The Black Mill, Winchelsea,"
A further purchase of pictures for the National Gallery was marls by the Selection Committee yesterday. The works chosen were;— No. 110 in' Gallery 2. "The Goblin Market," by Frank Cray, R. 0.1., which reached third place in the popular voting; No, 3, in Gallery 2, "Sunrise, Pas do Calais." by JJ. Hughes-Stanton, A.U.W.R., H. 0.1.; ami No. 17, in Gallery 2, "Saita Moss, Cumberland," by Olive Hall, I. Tho painting by James'S. Hill entitled "The Tower Bridge, London," which was placed second in tha recent ballot, was not considered, as it has been reserved for presentation by the Chamber of Commerce.
