As a result of to-day's play in tho Australia-Surrey match, the former require 53 runs to win, with eight wickets to fall. When play was resumed to-day Surrey had scored 139, and tho Australians had lost five wickets for 102. Macartney being 57 not out*. Tho weather was bright and cool; and tho wicket fast. There was only a small attendance. Macartney and Matthews. Macartney was accompanied to tho wickets by Matthews. The former reached his century in 175 minutes, having mado exactly half the runs scored—2oo, mado in 180 minutes. Matthews, by good olf driving, reached 58, when ho was caught by Bird off Hayes, at long-off. Six for 220. Tho partnership had added 124 runs. Macartney left the same over. In attempting to drivo Ilnyes, he was clean bowled. He had been at tho wickets 195 minutes, his scoro including eighteen l's. Tho retiring batsman had not given a chance. Seven for 229. Emery and Hazlitt took the score to 238, when the latter put his leg in front to Rushby. Eight for 238. Carkcek followed, mado 4, and fell a victim "to tho same bowler. Nine for 25G. Whitty joined Emery, tho pair adding 3G for the last wicket, Whitty being caught easily at cover by Hobbs oft' Rushby. Ten for 292. Emery was 37, not out, mado in his usual vigorous style. Surrey's Sccond Effort. With Hitch absent, the County at its second knock could do no better than 205. Hayward and nobbs, as usual, opened to the bowling of Whitty and Emery. The former was never comfortable, and with the score at 25, Emery got liim leg before. One for 25. The veteran had made eight. Hayes followed, and 105 was hoisted when the newcomer lifted Hazlitt to Whitty at mid-on. Two for 105. Hayes was responsible for IG. Hobbs meanwhile was batting splendidly. With his personal scoro 81, M'Laren, fielding substitute for Jennings, magnificently caught him at long-on oft Hazlitt. The Surrey "crack's" score included a sixer and twelve 4's. Three for 114. Hazlitt secured a wicket next ball, clean bowling Dufcat, who had mado 8. Four for 111. A fast ball from Kellewny disposed of Bush when his scoro was B—five for 142-— and Emery clean bowled Harrison before he had scored. Six for 170. Meanwhile Bird was batting with characteristic vigour and piling on the runs. 110 had Strudwick for another partner, but tho wicketkeeper hit Emery to M'Laren at short-leg after scoring a couple. Seven for 188. Then Emery got Bird's wicket, tho batsman hitting across one. ,He had posted 08 runs in 75 minutes, including two sixers, and eight 4's. Eight for iBB.
Itushby, who followed, was also oleaii. bowled by Emery for 5, and tho innings terminated, Hitch being absent with a chill,

Wanting 53 to win, the colonials have lost two wickets for no runs, Mayno being run out in the first over, and Gregory getting l.b.w. to Piatt. Stumps wero drawn at this stage. x BRILLIANT CRICKET.
