It appeared strango to him that 0110 partner could work while another could not. llu thought there should be an exception in favour of partners. The inspector points out the difficulty which would arise, where, say, five partners were employed. EPISODE ON STEAMER. Greymouth, May 17. William George Thomas, a passenger from Wellington to Grey.moutli on tho Mapourika on May 6, was arrested yesterday on a charge of stealing a portmanteau, tho property of W. Watson, another passenger, also other articles, including a ship's rug. Thomas wis also charged on a warrant issued at Napier with stealing an overcoat valued at 10s„ tho property of Samuel Heath. Fred Smith was also charged that ho received a portion. of the goods, knowing them to have been stolen. The two were remanded till Monday. CHINESE PROTEST. Christchurch, May 16. Representatives of the Chinese community hero write to the newspapers emphatically denying tho rumour that Chinese intend to start a furniture factory in Christchurch. They say tho Chinese have not sufficient money to finance such an industry or instal machinery' to enable them to compete with tho big factories already in existence. SLY.-GROG CASE. Dunedin, May IG. In the Supreme Court to-day Margaret Parker was re-tried on a charge of sly grog-selling at St. Kilda on April 11. Tho jury again disagreed. In reply to the Judge the Crown Prosecutor said ho had pretty well made up his mind what coursc to adopt, but he would take till the following day to decide whether he would proceed further with the case. AUTOMOBILE CLUB. Palmerston, May 16. It has been decided to form a local Automobile Association here. _ Dr. Wilson has been elected provisional president. Messrs. E. S. Abraham, A. J. Toxward, and Dr. Wilson were appointed delegates to attend the proposed conference of delegates of the Automobile Associations at Wellington. HURT AT THE HUNT. . Ashburton, May 18. While participating in the Christchurch Hunt Club's "meet" at Winslow yesterday Miss 0. D. Keith, of Ashburton, met with a serious accident. Her mount took a fence too soon, and fell partly, oil its rider, who was • discovered in a semiconscious condition, and severely cut about the face. An examination showed that a bono in one hand was broken, while nine stitches had to be inserted in tho young lady's face. It will bfe some considerable time before she recovers from the shock. HON, A. M. MYERS, Dunedin, May 18. The Hon. A. M. Myers, Minister for Railways, received a number of deputations regarding Departmental matters, mainly having relation to the Otago railways. He leaves for Wellington by the second express to-morrow. • EDUCATION AND LOCAL BODIES BILL. Christchurch, May 17. The North Canterbury Education Board has drawn up a memorandum setting out its grounds of objection to the inclusion of education boards within the scone of the Local Government Bill. Mr. Dalzioll, chairman of the board, leaves for Wellington to-morrow night to attend tlie conference. LOCAL BODIES' LOANS. Gisborne, May 17. The members of the Waikohou County Council i.o-dav spoke in strong terms of protest regarding the limit on counties to borrow only .£SOOO fronj the State Guaranteed Advances Department in tho year. It was thought that the limit indicated a tightness in the money market. Tho county had *£7000 works for which loans were urgently needed. THE KING'S HONOUR. Christchurch, May 17. A special parade of the Ist North Canterbury Infantry Regiment was held to-night/ An official announcement was made of the assumption of tho colonelcy-in-chief by the King. NEWS IN BRIEF. Dunedin, May 17. At the instance of the Crown Prosecutor, the case against Margaret Parker for sly grog-selling, in which two juries failed to agree, was ordered to stand over till next sitting. A branch of the New • Zealand Sports Protection League was formed hero last night. Auckland, May 17. Mr. Archibald Clark, a well-known coastal skipper, was found drowned in the harbour this morning. Woodville, May 16. The municipal election to-day for a councillor to take the placo of Councillor James Grant, who was elected Mayor, resulted as follows:—Joseph Franklin, 211; Mr. Ernest Giles, 138.
