VOTING FAIRLY HEAVY

It was generally assumed that the voting ill the City Council by-election yesterday would bo .-very small, but the event proved otherwise. In ai1,8410 valid votes were cast, and this total would no doubi. have boon considerably augmented but for a downtiour of rain which commenced shortly after 5 o'clock, just, as many people were leaving their yl.atcs of work and business to go home, Only mild interest was displayed in the election during the day. In the forenoon many poll clerks practically had a sinecure. to to 11.30 a.m. only 159 people had voted at the Town Hall, about 70 at Svdney Street, 9 at the Botanical Oardens 12 at the Tinakori Road Schoolroom', 10 at St. Mark's, and 14 at the booth in Kent Terrace. Mr. Tregear has a majority of 793 rotes over the candidate who comes second on the list (.Mr. Thompson). The remaining candidate, Mr, Fullford, forfeits liis deposit under the rule that to recover this sum a candidate must poll not less than one-eighth of the votes recorded for the candidate who heads the jioli. The result of the election was made known by the returning officer (Mr. J. Ames) at 7.10 p.m. Mr. Tregear'was congratulated upon his victory by a number of his friends who had assembled at the Town Hull, but there were no speeches by candidates.
