London, May 16. Surrey, tho fifth county 6n tho champion list last season, wero tho opponents of tho Australians to-day, playing with the following teamM. C. Bird, H. S. Bush, T. Hayward, J. B. Hobbs, E. G. Jlaycs, A. Ducat, E. S. Harrison, 11. Strndwick, G. J. W. Piatt, W. Hitch, and T. Itushby.

Tho following represented Australia: — W. Bardsley, S. E. Gregory, C. Kelloway, Or. R. Hazlitt, C. G. Macartney, S. 11. Emery, W. Carkeek, J. T. Matthews, E. E. Mayne, W. J. Whitty, and C. B. Jennings.

Tho match was played on the Oval, and when play commenced the weather was bright, but chilly, and tho wickot was firm. Rain foil later in the day. Thero was only a small attendanco. SURREY AT THE WICKETS, Bird won tho toss from Gregory, and sent Hayward and Hobhs to the wickets, tho bowlors being Whitty and Emery. In his third over, Emery got Hobbs's middle stump with a full-pitcher. In tho next over, Hayward was smartly caught by Macartney oil Whitty, the board reading two for 10. The newoomcr, Ducat, added one, but, playing late to ono from Whitty, was clean bowled. In the following over Emery knocked Bush's leg-stump out oi the ground. A shower of rain interrupted play for a quarter of an hour, and on resuming Hayes 6lcied Whitty, and Bardsloy effected a catch at third man. Five for 33. Bird and Harrison thon became associated, and stopped tho rot, tho former by vigorous play and the latter by careful tactics. Bird onco drovo Hazlitt to the on for a sixer, and later hit Emery on to tho top of the pavilion. Tho pair brought tho total to a century after 120 minutes' play. Bird had scored 76 in 110 minutes, and was then smartly 6tuinped by Carkeek. His hits included two sixes and ten fours. The partnership had lasted 100 minutes, and the stand resulted in 98 being added to tho score.

Tho last four batsmen only added eight runs,'Whitty dismissing one of them and Emery 'three, two of them in his last over.

AUSTRALIANS' BAD OPENING. When play ceased, the Australians had lost five wickets for 102. Tho visitors opened badly, Gregory and Mayne being out with the total at G. Macartney and Bardsley were then associated, and by careful play took the scoro to 46, when rain interrupted the game for thirty-five minutes. After a partnership of an hour, the pair had added 53. Bardsley was then bowled by Rushby. Jennings followed, only to be run out through Macartney's fault. He had scored 11. Kolleway was bowled by Hayes before ho liad scored. Stumps were then drawn, Macartney beiug not out with 57 runs opposito his name.
